The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is a critical moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After launching in 2008 and captivating audiences worldwide, the franchise is facing a turning point. As the original fanbase grows older, the MCU needs fresh faces to lead the next chapter, which unfortunately means some beloved heroes will have to step aside. Recent reports strongly suggest that Bucky Barnes will be one of them.
Still skeptical? We understand. Many fans have long predicted the death of Sebastian Stan’s character in Avengers: Doomsday, and a new casting choice has only fueled those rumors as the movie’s release approaches.
Sebastian Stan Is Ready to Travel in Marvel for DC
There’s been some buzz about a new casting announcement, but it’s for a DC Comics film, not Marvel. Recently, reports emerged that Stan is joining the cast of The Batman: Part 2, the sequel to the successful film by Matt Reeves. He’ll be acting alongside Robert Pattinson, and production is expected to begin in 2027. While it’s currently unknown what role Stan will play, many fans believe he’ll portray Harvey Dent, who is famously known as Two-Face.
Fans believe Stan is leaving Marvel Studios because he’s looking at other superhero roles. Playing a superhero is a big commitment, taking up a lot of time. Luckily, the timing works out for him – filming for Avengers: Doomsday started in early 2025, with more shooting planned for 2026, and he won’t begin work on The Batman: Part 2 until 2027. This should avoid any conflicts, unless his character, Bucky, also appears in Avengers: Secret Wars.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m hearing that the next big Avengers movie – the one after Avengers: Doomsday – is currently aiming to start filming around the middle of 2026, assuming everything stays on track. They’re planning for a six-month shoot, but honestly, with these big productions, things always come up, so that could easily change. Apparently, production is scheduled right after The Batman: Part 2, and you can imagine Kevin Feige, or ‘Stan’ as the source calls him, wanting to avoid any potential clashes there. And something else that makes sense? Word is they’re seriously considering killing off Bucky in Doomsday. It feels like a natural progression for the story, honestly.
It’s Time for Bucky’s Journey to End

Stan’s portrayal of Bucky Barnes first appeared in 2011—hard to believe it’s been almost 15 years! When Bucky returned as the Winter Soldier, he quickly became incredibly popular with Marvel fans. We’ve watched his character develop significantly over time, and his latest role in Thunderbolts felt a little underwhelming given everything he’s been through.
As a huge MCU fan, I’ve loved watching Bucky Barnes evolve over the years. But honestly, I think it’s time for the character to have a proper send-off, and I can’t think of a better place than in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. It just feels right that his story ends with Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers by his side – after all, Cap’s the one who brought Bucky into this world. Seeing those two share a final moment would be incredibly powerful. Plus, with Chris now taking on the role of Batman, it seems pretty clear his commitments to the MCU are winding down, and Bucky’s time with Marvel is limited.
