Sebastian Stan Wins Golden Globe for ‘A Different Man’: ‘Our Ignorance and Discomfort Around Disability and Disfigurement Has to End Now’

Sebastian Stan clinched his initial Golden Globe award, receiving the statuette as the top actor in a musical or comedic production for “A Different Man.

In his address, Stan urged the audience to consider and overcome prejudices against people with disabilities. In the movie “A Different Man,” directed by Aaron Schimberg, Stan portrays Edward, an ambitious actor dealing with neurofibromatosis, a condition that leads to the growth of tumors on skin and bone. He shares the screen with Adam Pearson, a talented actor who actually has neurofibromatosis in real life.

Aaron Schimberg and Adam Pearson, I wish you could be here with me. Let me share this moment with you. Thank you for putting your faith in us,” Stan started off in his acceptance speech. “It’s high time we put an end to our apprehension about disabilities and abnormalities. We should strive to make it ordinary and keep showcasing it. Let’s foster understanding. One effective method is by consistently promoting stories that embrace inclusivity.

Besides mentioning his first movie, “The Apprentice,” Stan also acknowledged it. He’s been nominated in the ‘Best Actor in a Drama’ category, thanks to his impressive portrayal of a younger Donald Trump in that film.

Stan stated, ‘Making this movie wasn’t a walk in the park. The same goes for ‘The Apprentice,’ another production I was fortunate to contribute to and feel great about. These projects tackle challenging themes, yet they are authentic and essential. We can’t shy away from them.’

Stan also thanked A24, his team, his manager of 27 years and his mother and stepfather.

Stan expressed his surprise to EbMaster following the announcement of the nominations last month. “I’m quite taken aback,” he said, “as both our films have had such unique and challenging paths. We produced ‘A Different Man’ two years ago, but it was put on hold due to the strike. The fact that we’re still around – and ‘Apprentice’ has been in development for five years – is incredibly humbling and rewarding.” Stan is one of three actors nominated twice at this year’s awards, alongside Selena Gomez for “Emilia Pérez” and “Only Murders in the Building,” and Kate Winslet with “Lee” and “The Regime.” He had previously been recognized for his portrayal of Tommy Lee opposite Lily James as Pamela Anderson in the Hulu series “Pam & Tommy.

Last year, the film titled “A Different Man,” directed by Schimberg, made its premiere at Sundance. Later, it garnered the Silver Bear for outstanding lead performance by Stan at the Berlin Film Festival. Moreover, in the autumn, it was honored with the best picture award at the Gotham Awards.

Additionally, Jesse Eisenberg (“A Real Pain”), Hugh Grant (“Heretic”), Gabriel LaBelle (“Saturday Night”), Jesse Plemons (“Kinds of Kindness”), and Glen Powell (“Hit Man”) were also contenders in the same category as Stan.
