As a seasoned cinephile with a knack for appreciating the nuances of comedy and drama, I find myself thoroughly intrigued by Sebastian Maniscalco‘s foray into acting through his role in Max’s “Bookie.” Having had the pleasure of witnessing Maniscalco’s stand-up prowess, it’s fascinating to see how he seamlessly blends his comedic flair with a more subtle, yet equally engaging performance as Danny.
Sometimes, Sebastian Maniscalco’s stand-up personality seeps into his role on “Bookie.” Instead of asking for a reduction, executive producers Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay embrace these occasional lapses.
Bakay praises a forthcoming episode of ‘Bookie’, set to air on Max with ten additional episodes for Season 2, premiering weekly from Dec. 12. He explains that this individual saved the day for them, as they might appeal for help when in dire straits, saying something like, ‘hey pal, we’re stuck!’
As a dedicated admirer of Maniscalco’s standup, I can certainly relate to what Bakay is referring to: In his act, when he wants to drive home a particular point, the stand-up sensation will momentarily pause, up the swagger with a bit more flair, and elongate specific syllables in a word or phrase for added humor.
On occasion,” Maniscalco acknowledges, “the character Sebastian peeks through during filming.” He is the actor portraying family man and bookie Danny in the series “Bookie.
In episode 2, viewers can expect a glimpse of “Sebastian on stage” as Danny and Ray (played by Omar Dorsey) confront a menacing drug lord about an outstanding gambling debt.
In the upcoming second episode, we’ll see Charlie Sheen returning, having previously appeared as a guest in Season 1 of “Bookie.” At that time, he made news by reconciling with his former boss from “Two and a Half Men,” Chuck Lorre.
Bakay remarks that Charlie is exceptional and has returned, making everything splendid. He found their recent reconciliation intriguing. The two had created stunning music for years, and upon Charlie’s arrival, he surpassed all expectations.
In the second season of “Bookie”, the story continues from where it ended in Season 1: Danny’s spouse Sandra (Andrea Anders) has departed him following his persistent choice to hold onto his risky job as a sports bookie. Simultaneously, Ray’s cherished grandmother (Arnetia Walker) is on the verge of getting married – only for her fiancé to fall unconscious at the wedding ceremony. As events unfold, Danny finds himself racing towards Modesto in an attempt to win back his wife, who has returned to live with her mother.
Bakay mentions that we ended things in an intriguing manner for Sebastian’s character, as he needs to win back his wife, having come to understand that he can’t function without her. Similarly, Omar faces issues too, since his grandmother’s fiancé bails out at the altar, but it turns out he’s not truly deceased – more like ‘undead.’ So both characters are dealing with pressing issues right away, providing a solid foundation for further development.
Danny successfully reconciles with his wife, but under a condition: His mother-in-law, portrayed by Dale Dickey, will be moving in. “She’s hysterical,” Bakay shares. “The best part about Sebastian is that he quickly regrets his choices, and she does it swiftly.
Maniscalco expresses his delight in portraying the character Danny, as his life becomes increasingly chaotic. “As we witness the assortment of predicaments my character, Danny, finds himself in, starting with his mother-in-law, I’m amazed at the turmoil he experiences in such a brief span,” he states. “Exploring the diverse paths that Ray and Danny travel, both personally and professionally, was an exciting adventure.
Following his thriving standup comedy career, Maniscalco finds it intriguing to hone his acting abilities on “Bookie.” He attributes Bakay and Lorre for providing ample laughter on set, which he feels affirms that his humor is effective. As a comedian, he cherishes laughter and appreciates the validation that his jokes are funny through the laughter. He’s growing accustomed to working with other actors and learning something new every day.
Lorre expressed that he was already a fan of Maniscalco’s acting talents, having seen him in movies such as “The Green Book” and “The Irishman,” before casting him in “Bookie.” It was evident to him that Maniscalco had the ability to make the transition from stand-up comedy to acting on screen seamlessly. There was never any doubt or worry about his transition from the stage to a film set.
In the show “Bookie,” Vanessa Ferlito plays Danny’s sister, while Jorge Garcia takes on the role of a bookie within Danny and Ray’s team. This season, Rob Corddry has been promoted to a regular cast member. Additionally, notable guest stars, including Sheen’s return, are Ray Romano, David Paymer, Zach Braff, and Brad Garrett.
In this story, no character escapes without difficulties. Bakay remarks, “You can’t rely on anyone.” He adds, “The only individuals these characters can truly trust are each other. I believe Ray and Danny, whether they realize it or not, are the only two people in their lives they can genuinely depend upon. Everything they encounter brings complications. Their associates, their families, their wealth. Success has turned out to be the biggest curse for them.
