Interestingly, his mother, Patty Duke, previously held the same role for SAG-AFTRA 37 years prior to Astin’s term. In a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Astin expressed optimism and creativity about his new role. He stated, “I am overjoyed that the members have entrusted me to lead our esteemed organization through this difficult period and into a future characterized by self-assurance, advancement, and passionate advocacy.” Astin added, “I’m eager to start working.
Astin was chosen for office with his partner, actress Michelle Hurd who stars in “Law & Order: SVU” and “Star Trek: Picard”. In her role as secretary-treasurer, she will be responsible for this position. In her own words, Hurd expressed, “Our field is undergoing change, and we are encountering genuine hurdles, but I remain hopeful and prepared to take a stand.
Astin and Hurd ran together on a platform that included reinstating manufacturing in the United States and enhancing safeguards for Artificial Intelligence. During the 2023 strike, they both were members of the negotiation team. In 2026, these two will once again be at the table for negotiations when the guild’s existing film and television deal concludes.
