The recent Scrubs revival really benefited from ignoring Season 9 – it was the correct decision. While Med School wasn’t entirely bad, some of its episodes were controversial. Despite that, those episodes still included funny moments with the original cast, reminiscent of earlier seasons. It’s a shame, though, that a particularly strong scene featuring Turk and JD will now never be considered part of the show’s official story.
As a long-time viewer, let me tell you, revisiting Scrubs: Med School feels…complicated now. While Elliot’s pregnancy and her marriage to JD were acknowledged in Season 9, everything else from those 13 episodes feels largely disconnected from the show we now know. The revival essentially rewrote that Med School era, so officially, the last time we saw JD and the gang as it originally ended was back in 2009 with “My Finale” – almost 17 years ago! You can still stream Med School, and it’s fine if you want to, but it’s important to understand it exists as a separate branch in a surprisingly intricate Scrubs timeline. It’s enjoyable, sure, but it carries a lot less weight knowing how things have changed after the revival dropped.
Season 9’s “Our Role Models” Has One of Turk & JD’s Funniest ‘Scrubs’ Scenes

The ninth season of Scrubs wasn’t well-received, mainly because it shifted the focus away from the show’s original characters. New interns became central to the storylines, which disappointed many longtime viewers – some even stopped watching the spin-off, Med School, before it finished. They likely missed the show’s signature humor, like a memorable comedic moment between Turk and JD. For example, in the episode “Our Role Models,” JD surprisingly shows up seeking advice just as Turk is preparing for surgery.
The classic chemistry between Braff and Turk is still strong, even though Braff was starting to move away from the show behind the scenes. What makes this particular scene even funnier is Turk’s patient, who keeps waking up and offering his opinions on JD’s problems. Turk’s frustrated yells of “You should be asleep!” – and similar lines later on – really add to the humor. This scene stands out as a bright spot in the often-uneven Med School season, and it’s one of the few times we see the two best friends genuinely connecting in the show’s ninth season. Ultimately, it showed that the original Scrubs formula still had potential, but the show needed time to rediscover its footing and fulfill that promise.
Why This ‘Scrubs’ Season 9 Scene Wouldn’t Work in the Revival

JD was only a temporary professor in Scrubs: Med School. While the recent revival seems to change what happened after the show’s eighth season, his move to St. Vincent’s still feels like a natural part of the story in season nine. Because of this, when he returns for the short-lived spin-off, he doesn’t have much standing at the new Sacred Heart. This allows him to get away with the incredibly unprofessional act of interrupting Turk during surgery to ask for advice on something so small and unimportant. It was definitely wrong, but that’s what makes the scene so humorous.
The new Scrubs revival finds JD as the Chief of Medicine, a position Dr. Cox—played by John C. McGinley—appoints him to in the premiere episode, “My Return.” The show has always been set in a slightly unrealistic world where unusual events happen without major repercussions.
Beyond its famous dreamlike scenes, what Dr. Cox does in the “Our Role Models” episode wouldn’t be believable. While the new season has referenced moments from the original series, having the Chief of Medicine disrupt a surgery without a strong justification would make the show feel too unrealistic. Luckily, viewers can still experience that memorable scene from Season 9 and enjoy the ‘Med School’ episode as a separate piece of content.
