‘Scrubs’ Revival Episode 3 Makes It Clear How Difficult JD & Elliot’s Divorce Has Been

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the third episode of the Scrubs revival, “My Rom-Com.” The revival of Scrubs feels remarkably similar to the original series. If you disregard Season 9, it’s as if the show never left television. However, one change has upset some fans, and it centers around Zach Braff’s character, JD. Braff is perfectly capturing the essence of his iconic role, but a behind-the-scenes issue has unexpectedly added emotional complexity.

The two-part premiere of Scrubs hinted at a major storyline change but quickly moved on, which felt dismissive given its importance. However, the third episode, “My Rom-Com,” finally gives this change the focus it needed. While not fully resolving the situation, the episode promises answers and sets the stage for the rest of the Scrubs revival.

“My Rom-Com” Fixes How Casually the ‘Scrubs’ Revival Has Handled JD & Elliot’s Divorce

ABC

As a huge Scrubs fan, I was really happy when JD and Elliot finally got married – it happened after Season 8 and the revival kept that part of their story going, which was great. But honestly, the way they handled the divorce in the new episodes felt…off. They quickly revealed they’d split up since the finale, and while there was a little tension at first, they basically fell right back into their old dynamic at Sacred Heart. It just didn’t ring true to me; divorces are usually pretty tough, and the show didn’t really seem interested in acknowledging that at all in those first couple of episodes.

In the latest episode, JD and Elliot finally have a heartfelt conversation, revealing that both are hurting more than they let on. Even though Elliot ended their relationship, she’s clearly affected by working with and for JD, now her boss. While they attempt to build a friendship, it’s going to be a difficult adjustment for both of them. Elliot admitting she still considers JD “family” makes viewers wonder what caused their split between the original series and the revival.

JD & Elliot’s Post-Divorce Storyline Is Far From Over

ABC

The show Scrubs hasn’t explained JD and Elliot’s divorce, only that it happened. While some fans worry the split won’t be properly resolved, it’s likely it will be. Their on-again, off-again relationship was a central part of the show, and when they finally got together in Season 8 (and the later, short Season 9), it felt like the natural conclusion the writers had planned.

The new season of Scrubs really needs to explain what went wrong with JD and Elliot’s marriage. It’s clearly a central puzzle for the show, especially after their painful conversation in “My Rom-Com.” Since the revival is working so hard to recapture the feel of the original series, leaving their relationship unresolved feels like a major loose end that will eventually need to be fully addressed.
