‘Scream’ Star Should Be DCU’s Wonder Woman, Says MCU Actor: “I’m Just Throwing It Out There”

Though Simu Liu is well-known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including his breakout role as Shang-Chi in 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and an upcoming appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, he’s hoping to bring his The Copenhagen Test co-star, Melissa Barrera (formerly of Scream), into the DC Universe. He and Barrera recently worked together on the Peacock action series, The Copenhagen Test.

In an interview with JoBlo, Simu Liu praised Jenna Barrera’s dedication while filming The Copenhagen Test, noting she consistently challenges herself. He then publicly campaigned for Barrera to be cast as Wonder Woman in the new DC Universe, even directly mentioning James Gunn. Liu, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, believes Barrera’s impressive stunt work – which he described as “Wonder Woman-esque” – makes her an ideal candidate for the role.

I’m not sure if James Gunn or anyone else is hearing this, but I think she’s really dedicated and works incredibly hard. During stunt practice, there were times she reminded me of Wonder Woman – I just wanted to mention it.

Wonder Woman is a hugely popular role in Hollywood. Gal Gadot famously played her in the DC Extended Universe, but James Gunn’s new DC Universe is developing a new Wonder Woman movie. The screenplay is being written by Ana Nogueira, who also wrote for Supergirl. There were rumors that Wonder Woman would appear in the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, and that casting was underway. However, James Gunn has stated that this isn’t true – the role hasn’t been cast, and Wonder Woman won’t be in the next Superman movie.

If Eiza González Barrera were to be cast as Wonder Woman, it would mark a major career resurgence for the actress, and be seen by many as a positive outcome. Barrera previously played Sam Carpenter in the 2022 and 2023 Scream movies, becoming a central character in the series. She was originally slated to return for Scream VII in a plotline where her character would become the villain. However, those plans changed when Spyglass Media fired her after she publicly criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza, calling it “genocide.” Spyglass labeled her posts as “anti-Semitic,” a claim she disputed. Scream VII has since been significantly revised, and despite the return of original star Neve Campbell, many fans are disappointed by Barrera’s dismissal.

Melissa Barrera has publicly discussed the difficult period she faced after being let go from Scream VII, saying she went ten months without receiving any significant new film roles. Landing the role of Wonder Woman would be a major career win for her, and interestingly, James Gunn – who has experienced being unfairly fired himself – is now in a position to make that happen, offering some hope. MovieWeb has even included Barrera on a list of ten actresses who could convincingly play Wonder Woman in the new DC Universe, though it will likely be a while before any casting announcements are made. However, there’s a complication: if Paramount Pictures succeeds in its attempt to buy Warner Bros., Barrera’s chances of becoming Wonder Woman – or appearing in any future Warner Bros. films – would likely be over.
