Scream 7 is burning it all down at the box office.
The new Scream movie, directed by Kevin Williamson and continuing the 30-year-old series, seems to be doing well, likely because it brings back several popular actors. Neve Campbell returns to the cast after not appearing in the previous film, joining Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Matthew Lillard, along with some new faces.
According to Variety, Scream 7 is projected to bring in $97.2 million globally during its opening weekend. Of that amount, $64.1 million is expected to come from theaters in the US and Canada—the biggest domestic opening weekend in the Scream series, surpassing the $44.4 million earned by Scream VI, and the highest domestic debut of any movie released so far this year. International theaters are predicted to contribute another $33.1 million.
The film has already surpassed the total worldwide earnings of Scream 4 from 2011, which made $97.1 million. This makes it the sixth highest-grossing film in the Scream series, and it achieved this in just its opening weekend.
Whether Scream 7 will become the most successful Scream movie financially is still unknown. Although Scream VI had a strong opening, its worldwide earnings of $169.1 million weren’t enough to surpass the totals of Scream 2 ($172.4 million) or the first Scream movie ($173 million), when not accounting for inflation.
I’ve put together a look at how well each Scream movie did at the box office. I’m including both the original numbers and what those numbers would be worth today, adjusted for inflation.
| Title | Domestic Debut | Debut (Adj.) | Global Total | Total (Adj.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scream (1996) | $6.3 million | $12.9 million | $173 million | $354.8 million |
| Scream 2 (1997) | $32.9 million | $66.3 million | $172.4 million | $347.6 million |
| Scream 3 (2000) | $34.7 million | $66.5 million | $161.8 million | $310 million |
| Scream 4 (2011) | $18.7 million | $27 million | $96 million | $138.8 million |
| Scream (2022) | $30 million | $34.7 million | $138.8 million | $160.6 million |
| Scream VI (2023) | $44.4 million | $47.8 million | $169.1 million | $182.2 million |
| Scream 7 (2026) | $64.1 million | N/A | TBD | N/A |
Honestly, I’m a little worried about how well the new movie will do. There are a few things that could really hurt its numbers, and I’m especially concerned about the calls for people to boycott it. It all started after they fired Melissa Barrera, who was amazing in the last two Scream films, because of her posts supporting Palestine. It’s a tough situation, and I’m not sure how many fans will stick with the series now.
Reviews for Scream 7 have been very negative, giving it the lowest score of any film in the Scream series on Rotten Tomatoes – just 34% from critics. However, audiences seem to like it much more, giving it a 78% rating on Popcornmeter and a B- CinemaScore, which is a good score for a horror film.
If Scream 7 performs similarly to Scream VI, it could gross around $244.1 million worldwide. While that would be the highest total earnings for any film in the series, it wouldn’t be enough to rank among the top films when accounting for inflation – it would likely land at No. 4, behind the first three Scream movies.
