‘Scream 7’ Box Office Opening Weekend Sets Franchise Record

After numerous production hurdles, Paramount revived the Scream series in February 2026 with Scream 7. The film follows a now-retired Sidney Prescott, living with her family in Pine Grove, as her teenage daughter becomes the target of new Ghostface killers. A developing storyline suggests the original killer, Stu Macher, may have actually survived the events of the first Scream movie. While recent installments, like 2023’s Scream 6, have been box office hits, controversy surrounding the sequel raised concerns about its potential success. Scream 7 premiered on February 27th and quickly proved those concerns wrong, earning a remarkable $64.1 million domestically during its opening weekend – breaking the franchise record previously held by Scream 6 ($44.4 million). With an additional $33.1 million earned internationally, the film’s total global opening weekend gross reached $97.2 million, according to Variety.

Paramount achieved its first No. 1 movie release in a year with this film, following Novacaine in March 2025. While early predictions estimated a $40-45 million opening weekend, the actual results significantly surpassed those expectations.

Scream Franchise Alive & Well After ‘Scream 7′ Success’

Paramount Pictures

The latest Scream movie is a huge success, pushing the franchise’s total earnings past $1 billion worldwide. It’s on track to become the sixth in the series to earn over $100 million globally, and it now ranks as the sixth highest-grossing horror franchise of all time, behind only The Conjuring Universe, Alien, Resident Evil, It, and Saw. Paramount is so confident in the series’ continued success that they’ve already started planning Scream 8, even before Scream 7’s release. While details about the next film are still under wraps, it’s sure to continue the legacy of the Ghostface killer. Scream 7 will face competition from new releases – Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride and Disney/Pixar’s Hoppers – when they debut on March 6th. Paramount hopes the film remains popular and becomes one of the year’s biggest horror hits. Scream 7 is currently playing in theaters everywhere.
