Scottish councillor challenges Rockstar over staff dismissals

An Edinburgh city councillor is urging the city to support former employees of Rockstar North after the game studio unexpectedly laid off 31 people, and is formally questioning the company’s decision.

In late October, Rockstar Studios let go of more than 30 employees, claiming they had shared secret company information publicly. Following this, people protested the decision both outside Rockstar’s Edinburgh office and at the headquarters of its parent company, Take Two, in London.

Many people now believe the employees weren’t fired for leaking confidential information, but because the company was trying to discourage union activity, according to The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain.

Take Two refuted the allegations, asserting the employees were terminated due to serious misconduct and nothing else. However, those impacted, including a city councillor from Scotland, have continued to share their experiences.

Scottish councillor calls for support over fired Rockstar workers

Scottish Green councillor Dan Heap has proposed a motion to the Fair Work Committee, first reported by STV News, to directly help the Rockstar workers who were recently dismissed. He wants the council to provide them with information about their rights and assist them in applying for financial support during their unemployment.

The main point of the proposal focuses on Rockstar Games. Heap is asking the council leader to convince Rockstar to change its mind and bring the workers back.

I’m really hoping the council approves Heaps’ plan – it could make a huge difference for the workers and give them a real chance of getting their jobs back. We’ll just have to wait and see what they decide, though!
