Okay, so I just read about this new physics study, and it’s kind of terrifying! Apparently, they’ve figured out the universe might end a lot sooner than we thought. It’s a pretty big deal, and honestly, it’s a bit unsettling to think about!
A new study in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics suggests the universe will reach its end point sooner than previously thought.
Scientists have calculated that extremely dense objects left over after a star dies, such as neutron stars, will eventually disappear completely in about 10 to the power of 68 years.
Even though a number with 1 followed by 68 zeros represents an incredibly long time, this finding establishes a firm, and significantly shorter, maximum possible lifespan for matter in the universe.
Density determines the cosmic clock
These objects don’t last long because of a process called gravitational pair production, which is related to the work of Stephen Hawking. The researchers demonstrated that even without a black hole, the warping of space and time can cause massive objects to gradually lose energy and break down into smaller particles until they vanish.
The team used advanced math to find that how quickly a space object breaks down depends on its average density – how much stuff is packed into a given space.
Due to a basic law of physics, things like white dwarfs, supermassive black holes, and dark matter halos are expected to be among the last things remaining in the universe, gradually disappearing over incredibly long periods of time.

Surprisingly, the data showed that neutron stars and small black holes will disappear around the same time – in about 10 to the power of 68 years.
Since how packed matter is dictates how quickly these stars fade away, even very different types of dead stars share the same lifespan. Eventually, when their time is up, both will become unstable and explode.
