Researchers have created a sprayable powder that quickly stops severe bleeding – in about a second – much faster than standard bandages.
Scientists at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology developed a powder – as reported by SciTechDaily – intended for deep or oddly shaped wounds where traditional bandages and patches don’t work well.
This powder stops bleeding quickly when applied to a wound. It mixes with the blood to create a gel-like barrier that seals the area.
How the spray-on powder works
Unlike typical bandages that absorb blood, this powder quickly stops wounds from bleeding by forming a seal. It’s made of materials that work with the calcium in your blood to instantly turn into a gel-like coating – usually within a second.
During testing, the powder proved to be very absorbent. It created a sponge-like structure, capable of soaking up about 725% of its own weight. This makes it helpful for controlling bleeding until a gel can be applied.

The spray makes it fast and simple to treat even difficult wounds, which is a major benefit in emergencies. Plus, the powder form is designed to stay effective for a long time, so it’s always ready when you need it.
This technology is still being studied and isn’t yet available for use in patients.
In a groundbreaking medical first, doctors successfully performed heart surgery on a patient located over 10,000 kilometers away, using a robot controlled remotely in 2024.
