Researchers believe they’ve discovered why T. rex had such tiny arms – they likely evolved that way to balance out the size of its massive head and powerful bite.
Dinosaurs have been extinct for millions of years – we’re not talking about robotic versions! – but people remain captivated by these ancient creatures. Remarkably, scientists are still discovering new species, and recent research shows the Tylosaurus rex could reach an impressive 43 feet in length – that’s twice as big as a great white shark!
This dinosaur is known as T.Rex, though it’s different from the more formally named Tyrannosaurus rex. These huge creatures could grow over 40 feet long, but their arms were surprisingly small, creating an odd imbalance in their size.
T-Rex’s famously tiny arms have long been a source of jokes, even appearing in movies like Toy Story. Now, researchers believe they may have discovered why these dinosaurs had such short forelimbs.
T. rex had small arms because of their big heads
A recent study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B suggests that the T. rex’s small arms were likely a result of its large skull size.
According to the study’s lead author, Charlie Roger Scherer, dinosaurs with robust skulls tended to have small forelimbs. This held true regardless of the dinosaur’s size – whether it weighed one ton or ten tons, a strong skull usually meant relatively small arms.
If an animal relies on its head and powerful bite to take down big prey, long arms with claws become unnecessary. Evolution then favors reducing the size of those arms, redirecting energy towards strengthening the skull and making it the main weapon.

According to Scherer, a doctoral student at University College London’s Earth Sciences department, Tyrannosaurus Rex developed its powerful skull due to the types of animals it hunted.
Scientists believe the T. Rex probably hunted the Doolysaurus huhmini, a newly discovered dinosaur species from South Korea.
