School Spirits Season 3 Star Admits the Finale Ending ‘Felt So Wrong’ Because ‘It Was Too Perfect’

As a big fan of School Spirits, I just finished watching the season 3 finale, and wow, it really tied up a lot of loose ends! It was a pretty satisfying conclusion to several storylines they’ve been building.

Warning – The rest of this article contains spoilers for School Spirits Season 3 finale.

The most satisfying moment was when Kristian Ventura’s Simon and Peyton List’s Maddie were both brought back to life at the same time, finally reuniting. This gave the pair – who have been the heart of the show from the beginning – a genuinely happy ending.

Of course, the ending wasn’t satisfying for all viewers. The season left on a major cliffhanger – Van Heidt secretly possessed Maddie’s mother. Plus, several characters – Wally, Janet, Don, and Maddie’s dad – are now trapped in a strange in-between place after the afterlife.

Aside from that one issue, things are looking really good – the ghosts are free to move around, Maddie and Simon are alive and well, and everyone is back together.

Kristian Ventura, from the show School Spirits, recently spoke with Russ Milheim of TopMob about the surprisingly cheerful conclusion of Season 3. They also discussed how the romantic relationship between characters Maddie and Simon initially unfolded in a much different way.

Kristian Ventura explained that Simon’s last scene with Maddie felt unsettling because it was too happy. Both characters had returned from what felt like certain death, and for once, everything was going well – no one was in danger or desperate. Ventura pointed out that this perfection felt unnatural and off-putting.

Season 3 of School Spirits really focused on the romance between Maddie and Wally, played by Milo Manheim. But many viewers thought the show had been building a connection between Maddie and Simon in the first two seasons. Despite this, Wally remained a central part of Maddie’s story by the end of Season 3.

Ventura noted that Maddie and Simon directly express their love for each other in certain scenes. The actor also believes the script was altered to emphasize the deep connection between them, describing their love as a vital need – an inability to imagine life without the other person.

The actor from School Spirits clarified that the original plan was for a romantic storyline, but it has since been altered.

School Spirit’s Season 3 Finale Might Have Ended Too Well

Everything Seemed Great, Which Probably Means the Opposite Is True.

  • TopMob: “I want to make sure to talk about the big moment that you know all three seasons have been building towards. What was it like to actually be able to make physical contact with Maddie, that hug, and just that reunion? What was that moment like?”

I just remember touching Peyton and realizing how long it had been. It was a strange sensation – recognizing her physical presence. I thought, ‘Wow, this is her.’ I think hugs will exist even after we’re gone, Scar. But filming the movie theater scene – which I think was Simon’s last scene in Season 3 – felt incredibly awkward and unsettling.

It all felt too ideal. We were back in our own bodies, comfortably eating popcorn – a complete contrast to the usual life-or-death situations and screaming we experience. I kept thinking something was off. While filming, I’d ask Peyton what was happening because it felt like a perfect, unrealistic world. We ended the third season with a good cliffhanger, but this overly pleasant scenario – with pink skies and sunshine – just didn’t feel like ‘School Spirits.’

Simon and Maddie’s Love Story Changed Course

“I Do Think They Were Supposed to Be Romantic…”

  • TopMob: “I’m wondering, in your thoughts, do you think that the relationship between Simon and Maddie is truly just a deep friendship, or are there kind of romantic possibilities within that dynamic?”

Kristian Ventura pointed out that throughout the first two seasons, Maddie and Simon frequently and directly express their love for each other. He specifically recalled scenes like their confession in a classroom during Season 1 and Simon telling Maddie ‘I have always loved you’ in the Season 2 finale, both instances where they explicitly say ‘I love you’.

I think the best way to address the public’s questions is to say they’re just really close friends, not involved in a love triangle. Honestly, for years I’ve told the press they were just friends, but now, in 2026, I actually believe there’s something more. I think the writers deliberately changed the story. From the beginning, it was always clear that the connection between Maddie and Simon wasn’t just friendship or romance—it was a deep, essential need for each other, and a relationship you wouldn’t want to jeopardize.

Honestly, Russ, it seems like the characters were initially intended to have a romantic connection, but that’s shifted. It actually surprised me, and I’m not sure if the change is an improvement. It just feels like they’ve moved away from that storyline. You won’t believe what happened next, though!

I was really surprised during a recent interview. The interviewer asked me about being ‘replaced’ by Milo, and about how fans reacted to my character’s relationship with Maddie seemingly ending. It was shocking to hear that people felt so strongly about it. I think I responded by saying that my character wasn’t sidelined, just experiencing a different kind of love. But honestly, the show’s writing definitely shifted things, and it felt like that change wasn’t directly addressed.

Ventura also mentioned remembering a conversation with one of the show’s creators, who told him that Wally’s character was only meant to be on the show temporarily.

I do remember talking to one of the show’s creators, and he told me Wally was only supposed to be on the show temporarily. But things changed with what Paramount decided to do. I’d really like to know what the writers originally planned and get that explained in a fourth season. Honestly, I think another season would be amazing – it would be wild and a lot of fun.

Although Simon and Maddie are still possibilities, Kristian Ventura suggested another interesting couple: Simon and Janet.

I’m starting to wonder if the show is just trying to pair people up randomly. But honestly, Simon and Janet seem like the most natural fit. They connected quickly and even shared a really intimate moment early in the season. There’s just something easy about their dynamic – maybe it’s how well they work together or how selfless they both are. They seem to match each other intellectually. I think Simon and Janet would be a good couple, though I’m not sure if I’m just giving up on trying to predict what will happen.
