Schedule 1 has become a surprisingly popular indie game this year, despite its unusual premise: you build a drug empire. The creator, Tyler, was prepared to change the game to a farming simulator if Steam hadn’t allowed its sale due to the sensitive subject matter.
Tyler told GamesRadar that early in the game’s development, he had a backup plan. If Steam didn’t approve the game as it was, he could easily turn it into a farming simulator by removing all references to drugs. Luckily, that wasn’t necessary, and Steam approved the original concept.
Tyler went on to note that a few other countries “don’t love it,” including his native Australia.
Tyler remembered that they were initially blocked from operating in Australia, which was frustrating, but they eventually succeeded in entering the market.
As a fan, Schedule 1 immediately gave me Breaking Bad vibes! It’s like you’re this new person in town slowly building a drug empire. You can grow cannabis, but it’s all about getting it to customers. And yeah, you can even cook meth, but you’ve gotta be careful – avoiding the cops and other dealers is a huge part of the challenge!
Schedule 1 recently introduced cartel wars to the game, even though it’s still being developed. TVGS is now asking players to vote on what new feature they’d like to see added next.
Recently, the developers of the game Horses revealed they might have to close their studio because Steam refused to approve their game, and Valve wouldn’t reconsider the decision. This highlights the significant impact Steam’s approval process can have on game developers.
