Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta books, with their compelling characters, were ripe for a film adaptation, and a movie could have been quite good. However, the story truly shines as a TV series. The first season skillfully jumps between past and present, allowing viewers to see Nicole Kidman’s character both as a driven, up-and-coming medical examiner and as a more seasoned, and deeply affected, professional.
