Following the popular summer release of Jurassic World Rebirth, the actor has landed a new part – a first for their career.
Scarlett Johansson is one of the biggest action stars right now, and her movies – especially Jurassic World Rebirth – have made her one of the year’s highest-paid actors. But she’s also branching out, and has recently landed a leading role in the upcoming reboot of The Exorcist.
Following the announcement of the cast, director and writer Mike Flanagan praised Scarlett, saying she’s a remarkably talented actress who brings authenticity to every role, whether it’s in a horror movie or a big action film. He expressed his excitement about her joining the cast of the new Exorcist movie.
In May 2024, it was revealed that Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek would be involved in a new project. Scarlett Johansson is the first actor confirmed to star. The director stated, “The Exorcist inspired me to become a filmmaker, and I’m thrilled to create something new, daring, and frightening within that world.”
The new horror film is a fresh take on the classic Exorcist story, arriving after the recent movie, The Exorcist: Believer, didn’t do as well as hoped in theaters. Director David Gordon Green had planned more films in the series, but those plans were canceled. The original 1973 Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin and based on William Peter Blatty’s novel, is still considered a landmark horror film. This new movie isn’t a direct sequel to any of the previous films; it tells a completely new story within the world of The Exorcist.
According to reports, scheduling conflicts with other projects needed to be resolved, but this film is expected to be Johansson’s next project to shoot. The new version of The Exorcist will also be Johansson’s first time starring in a horror movie.
The actress has explored different genres, like the science fiction movie Under the Skin from 2013, but she’s never actually appeared in a horror film as the lead.
