Saturday Night Live Recap: Glen Powell Finally Hosts

Glen Powell explains the reason for his late debut hosting Saturday Night Live: he was originally scheduled to appear four years ago to promote Top Gun: Maverick during the Christmas episode. However, the movie’s release was postponed, and his hosting gig was canceled. Lorne Michaels even called to jokingly warn him that people wouldn’t recognize him by the time he eventually hosted.

Come on, Lorne, that’s not right! People liked him in shows like Set It Up, Scream Queens, and Everybody Wants Some well before 2021. Still, I get your point. I’m a fan of Powell, so it’s great to see him on the show. He fit right in and this episode is one of the best this season! He’s a solid supporting actor, happy to play smaller roles and play off other cast members – like in the sketch with Sebastian Maniscalco where he and Marcello Hernandez got to show off their physical comedy skills, or with Ashley Padilla’s funny scene.

Powell also effortlessly tackled the larger comedic parts. The Norwegian movie sketch feels mostly like a loose connection to promote Sentimental Value – the two films don’t share much beyond featuring Stellan Skarsgård. In it, Powell fully commits to playing an overly enthusiastic Norwegian actor portraying a heartbroken husband in a film called Scent of a Marriage, which is a nod to the Swedish film Scenes from a Marriage. He brought the same energy to his role as a sergeant in the Bob Army, delivering confidently absurd lines like “we gag them with blunt force” and “let’s show them how we serve country.” While these roles were somewhat one-dimensional and not always hilarious, Powell maintained a high level of energy throughout, and it was fun to see so many cast members involved.

Josh Powell often played up his physical presence and attractiveness, famously portraying a character similar to Liam Neeson’s in Taken. The humor comes from a slightly old-fashioned idea: Bryan Mills is leaving his daughter with her mother and new husband at the airport, and the husband, Dennis (played by Andrew Dismukes), feels threatened by their close relationship. This leads to some predictable but funny lines, like when Bryan delivers his famous “I have a very particular set of skills” and Dennis jokingly replies, “Not communication, though, right?”

The show started with some really strong sketches, though the quality dipped a bit as it went on. Powell, however, was consistently excellent and definitely deserves another invitation – he’s incredibly versatile.

Here are the highlights:

Monologue

Powell started building goodwill with a friendly and down-to-earth speech. He first addressed how often people were suddenly seeing his face everywhere, then talked about some of his earlier work – including a role in Spy Kids 3D and a music video he made himself for the song “Sugar, We’re Goin Down.” He really emphasized that we need to see the full video.

Most of the story focused on Powell’s plans to host an event back in 2021. He and his family had a nice moment with a UPS driver who happened to see them celebrating, but then the event didn’t actually happen, which made Powell look dishonest. Luckily, the story had a heartwarming ending: his sisters found the same UPS driver four years later, and Powell invited him to the show. Having the driver, Mitch, on stage with him brought the story to a satisfying conclusion, with Powell saying, “The best things in life don’t happen overnight, and no one knows that better than UPS.” It was a really sweet moment.

AI Photos

A family used an AI program to turn old photos from their grandmother’s childhood into short videos for a Thanksgiving visit to her senior home. However, the AI dramatically altered the memories, creating bizarre and unsettling results – like a dog with two tails and a strangely distorted image of a family friend. One baby photo showed the mother’s head floating and the father stretching the baby like an accordion. It made the family wonder if this was a sign that AI technology still has a long way to go. (While it’s unlikely to be the end of AI, it’s fun to imagine!)

I Miss My Ex’s Dad

This song reminded me of the best sketches on Saturday Night Live – it’s humorous, detailed, something everyone can connect with, and genuinely heartwarming. The idea is simple, as the title suggests: have you ever found yourself missing your ex’s parents even more than the ex themselves? What makes it truly brilliant is the switch in perspective, moving from Ben Marshall and Tommy Brennan to the exes’ dads – played by Powell and Kenan Thompson – who are also feeling the loss of their daughters’ former partners.

MacGruber

Just when I think Saturday Night Live has done everything it can with the MacGruber character, the show finds a way to surprise me. Will Forte returned this week because MacGruber is mentioned in the documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, and the sketch suggests he might prefer to go down with them. The writers even threw in a fun twist – MacGruber actually tries to detonate the bomb! As usual, the updated theme song lyrics are hilarious, including lines like, “He’s been doin’ lots of thinking ’bout where his life is taking him/Only God can judge him, MacGruber!”

Haircut

Ashley Padilla is shining in this simple but effective sketch about a terrible haircut. She perfectly portrays the character’s subtle frustration with the disastrous result – and the stylist’s odd signature touch. Despite the awful cut, she keeps repeating, “I like it!” as if trying to convince herself.

Cut for Time

The show opened with a segment on the recently published Jeffrey Epstein emails. The actress playing Karoline Leavitt (Padilla) skillfully avoided answering questions about Donald Trump’s involvement, which is becoming harder and harder to do. It was a good, brief opening, and just the first part of an episode heavily focused on the Epstein case. Once this topic is introduced, there’s no avoiding it!

Here are a couple of memorable lines from the song: ‘You’re the father figure I always needed, in addition to my biological dad,’ and ‘I unfortunately don’t remember my daughter’s name, and I know that’s terrible.’

• “I didn’t try to kiss your back.”

Chloe Fineman, playing Jennifer Coolidge, makes a late appearance at the guys’ weekend, but it doesn’t really add anything to the story.

• “We only answer to Leslie Bibb.”

This week’s Weekend Update was a bit shorter than usual, focusing mostly on jokes about Epstein – which were well-received – and skipping the usual guest appearance. I didn’t mind the change of pace. A joke referencing Trump claiming ‘Everybody knows I went down on Bill Clinton’ got a good laugh, as did the pun ‘doesn’t make cents,’ and the funny on-screen image of Colin Jost as a secret grandson of Hitler.

• “So you killed a lot of people, huh? Must be scary, pretty major sin.”

• “Looks like my wife’s the one who’s taken.”
