As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for dark humor, I must say that this week’s “Saturday Night Live” cold open was a delightful mockery of our collective internet obsession. Sarah Sherman’s portrayal of Nancy Grace was spot-on, capturing the essence of sensationalist journalism in a way that only SNL can.
The opening segment on ‘Saturday Night Live’ targeted the widespread internet interest in Luigi Mangione, the suspected murderer of United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson, through a skit starring Sarah Sherman portraying renowned true-crime commentator Nancy Grace.
Sherman, portraying Grace, shared a surprising account of the audacious December 4 murder in Manhattan, where Thompson was strolling towards an investor meeting. In a sensational manner reminiscent of tabloid reporting, Grace commented that Mangione is causing quite a stir among women and men alike, likening him to Dave Franco with Eugene Levy’s distinctive eyebrows.
Later in the scene, Kenan Thompson emerged as a passerby who unexpectedly came across the murderer. During their conversation at a McDonald’s, Grace inquired of Thompson’s character, “Is it hard to believe that individuals found this killer attractive?
In my own words as a movie enthusiast, I’d rephrase it like this:
The initial scene humorously mimicked the annoyance of having an unexpected advertisement interrupt while watching a YouTube video mid-sentence. Sherman’s Grace cautioned viewers that such interruptions could occur at any moment by “an incredibly loud ad.” Sure enough, the scene switched to SNL cast member Marcello Hernandez promoting a fast-paced exercise machine.
Grace’s additional visitor on the show was portrayed by Emil Wakim, who bears a striking resemblance to Mangione. “I’ve received some of the most amorous messages in my lifetime,” the character played by Wakim remarked.
In “SNL”, the cold open is a frequent feature, frequently used as a platform for guest appearances by celebrities. Last week, the Church Lady character, played by Dana Carvey, made a comeback in the “Saturday Night Live” Cold Open segment.
Previously in the show’s 50th season opener, Maya Rudolph took on the role of Democratic Presidential Nominee Kamala Harris, with James Austin Johnson playing Donald Trump, Bowen Yang acting as JD Vance, Jim Gaffigan portraying Tim Walz, Andy Samberg depicting Doug Emhoff, and Carvey enacting Joe Biden.
