As a dedicated gamer, I couldn’t contain my excitement as PlayStation’s State of Play event wrapped up with a fresh title from the brilliant minds at Housemarque, creators of last year’s critically lauded game, Returnal. The new game, Saros, was unveiled in a two-minute cinematic trailer that hinted at the return of the rogue-like elements we loved in Returnal. The protagonist in the trailer stated, “After every death, I always come back stronger,” suggesting a similar gameplay mechanic. The final seconds of the trailer revealed a 2026 release window, so we’ll have to wait a while longer for more details.
Returnal devs next game, Saros, revealed at PlayStation State of Play
Following the trailer’s unveiling, Housemarque’s Creative Director, Gregory Louden, discussed their latest upcoming title. Louden described “Saros” as the pinnacle of Housemarque’s gameplay-focused journey, a fresh single-player Intellectual Property that expands upon the acclaimed third-person action of “Returnal“. A sneak peek at the gameplay will be revealed later this year, ideally during Summer Game Fest, meaning we won’t have to wait until the end of the year.
The main character in “Saros” is Arjun Devraj, who is a formidable enforcer on a treacherous, morphing planet, constantly troubled by an eerie eclipse. This hint of what’s to come seems reminiscent of the intense combat scenes in “Returnal“. Towards the end of the trailer, there’s a glimpse into the protagonist’s eyes that suggests this, as a mysterious, multi-armed entity emerges from the water, seemingly armed with orbs of energy in each hand. It looks like these energies could be unleashed in intricate patterns of attacks, which the player must skillfully dodge to stay alive.
Further details can be found on the PlayStation Blog, where it’s stated that “the main gameplay difference between Saros and Returnal lies in permanent resources and progression, making every death significant.” In other words, after each death in both games, you will encounter a different world. However, in Saros, you can pick and permanently upgrade your arsenal from an assortment of evolving weapons and suit upgrades to “return stronger”. This novel feature promises to elevate the engaging action of Returnal to even greater levels of challenge and fulfillment.
However, there’s still a lot left to discover concerning the freshly unveiled Saros. We need to exercise patience as we await further insights this year, with the full understanding that we may not see its official launch until 2026.
