Sarah Michelle Gellar is upset about the cancellation of the planned ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot, and she believes an executive who didn’t like the original series is responsible.
Sarah Michelle Gellar was going to reprise her role as Buffy in a new series called Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. The pilot episode was to be directed by Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao and planned for release on Hulu sometime between 2026 and 2027.
So, the actress dropped a bomb on Instagram over the weekend – Hulu decided not to move forward with the reboot. And seriously, the post blew up – it’s already been seen by over eight million people! It’s kinda disappointing as a fan, but at least we know now.
Now, Gellar is speaking out, criticizing a producer who consistently made negative comments and caused problems during filming.
Sarah Michelle Gellar blames Buffy’s cancellation on exec who’s “not a fan of the original”

Gellar was surprised to hear the show was cancelled, just like the fans were, while she was at SXSW preparing for the premiere of ‘Ready Or Not 2’.
Sarah Michelle Gellar shared with People that she was preparing to go onstage with fans when she learned Hulu had canceled plans for a ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ reboot. She said the news was completely unexpected.
According to Gellar, one of the show’s executives openly disliked the original series and made it a point to say so, even admitting he’d never watched it all.

It was incredibly challenging to revisit a show as cherished as Buffy, especially for both me and Chloé. From the start, we faced an uphill battle, made even harder by the fact that one of the executives openly admitted to never having watched the original series.
She explained that the fans were the main reason they even started the show. Everyone enjoyed it, so it didn’t make sense to continue with someone who didn’t share that enthusiasm.
Gellar concludes by emphasizing that “Buffy” remains a classic, and she wants fans to understand that its impact isn’t lessened by recent events. The show’s enduring legacy will always be there for them.
