Steven Soderbergh began the Ocean’s film series in 2004, followed by two sequels in 2007 and 2011. The franchise was later continued in 2018 with the spin-off film, Ocean’s 8.
The movie Ocean’s 8 reimagined the classic heist story with an entirely new, all-female cast led by Sandra Bullock, who plays Danny Ocean’s sister, Debbie. She gathers a team of skilled women to pull off a complex robbery at the Met Gala. With two more films planned in the series, fans have until January 1, 2026, to catch Ocean’s 8 on Netflix before it’s no longer available.
Gary Ross directed Ocean’s 8, working from a screenplay he wrote with Olivia Milch. Sandra Bullock starred in the film, alongside a talented group of actresses including Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter.
Critics generally liked the show, highlighting the strong acting and its visually appealing style. While it has a 69% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers gave it a lower score of 47%.
Despite everything, Ocean’s 8 did well at the box office. Made with a $70 million budget, it earned $297.7 million around the world, according to Box Office Mojo.
The Oceans Franchise Continues
Despite being a hit in theaters, Ocean’s 8 didn’t get a follow-up movie. Now, nearly ten years later, the studio is looking to build on the film’s success and is planning new projects, including a movie set before the events of Ocean’s 8.
Talk of a prequel to Ocean’s Eleven began in May 2022. The movie was originally intended to be set in Europe during the 1960s and would have included familiar aspects of the first film. Margot Robbie is confirmed to star in and produce the project, taking over from Ryan Gosling.
The upcoming project is rumored to focus on the parents of Danny and Debbie Ocean, though the story details are still unconfirmed. Lee Isaac Chung signed on to direct in July 2025.
The team is getting back together for another movie, Ocean’s Fourteen. George Clooney, known for his role in the previous films, will be returning, as recently announced. Brad Pitt will reprise his character Rusty Ryan, Julia Roberts will be back as Tess Ocean, Matt Damon as Linus Caldwell, and Don Cheadle as Basher Tarr.
The movie Ocean’s Eight will no longer be available on Netflix after January 1, 2026. Currently, there are no confirmed release dates for the prequel or Ocean’s Fourteen.
