Samsung 512GB MicroSD Express For Switch 2 Releases Soon, Preorders Discounted

For Nintendo Switch 2 players looking to expand their storage, the official Samsung microSD Express Card is a top choice. Currently available in 256GB with a Super Mario design, Samsung will soon offer a 512GB version. You can pre-order the Samsung 512GB P9 microSD Express Card at Amazon for $95 (originally $100) before its November 4th launch. Samsung is releasing its first microSD Express card that doesn’t require Nintendo licensing, and it offers performance comparable to the officially licensed card. A 256GB version will be available for $55 – $5 cheaper than the Nintendo card. While the Samsung P9 has the lowest suggested retail price for 256GB and 512GB microSD Express cards on Amazon, Walmart’s Onn brand offers similar cards for around $10 less. Currently, the 512GB Onn microSD Express costs $84.77, and the 256GB model is just $46.77.

For fast and reliable storage, the SanDisk 512GB microSD Express at $120 and the Lexar 1TB Play Pro (currently $200, down from $220) are excellent choices. Lexar is unique among leading storage brands in offering a 1TB microSD Express card.

Nintendo Switch 2 storage space can disappear fast

The new Nintendo Switch 2 comes with 256GB of storage – a significant upgrade from the 64GB in the Switch OLED, and four times more than the original Switch and Switch Lite (which had 32GB). However, because Switch 2 can handle games with much better graphics, those games will also be much larger in terms of file size. For example, upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 games like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment (44.9GB), Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (31.6GB), and Kirby Air Riders (25GB) will take up a considerable amount of space. Even existing games demonstrate this, with titles like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (20GB), Mario Kart World (22GB), Pokemon Legends: Z-A (10GB), and Donkey Kong Bananza (8.9GB) all needing substantial storage.

If you want to save space on your Nintendo Switch 2, buying physical copies of first-party Nintendo games is a good idea, as the full game is stored directly on the game card. However, most third-party physical games use ‘Game-Key Cards’ – small cards that unlock a download of the full game from the eShop. This means even if you buy a physical copy, you’ll still need to download the game file. For example, a physical copy of Madden NFL 26 requires a 55.3GB download, and Star Wars Outlaws needs 20.9GB.

Several new and upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 games that use Game-Key Cards are quite large in terms of storage space. For example, Borderlands 4 needs 48.8GB, Persona 3 Reload requires 25.4GB, and Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero takes up 25GB. Currently, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is expected to be a massive 87.9GB download, meaning it will use a significant amount of the Switch 2’s storage.

With the increasing use of digital game codes and the growing size of major game releases, Switch 2 owners will probably fill up their system’s storage much quicker than they did with the original Switch.

microSD Express: What is it?

Express cards are a new technology in the world of memory cards, but they aren’t yet common. You might notice they cost more than older UHS-I cards, which were used with the original Nintendo Switch and many other devices. The main reason is speed.
