As a long-time movie lover who has witnessed the evolution of cinema across various cultures, I must say that Netflix’s decision to renew “The Boyfriend” for a second season is nothing short of inspiring. Having followed the journey of LGBTQ+ representation on screen since the early days, it is heartening to see this kind of progress being made in Japan, a country which until now has been lagging behind its G7 counterparts.
Netflix has given the go-ahead for a second season of the innovative Japanese reality series “The Boyfriend,” which revolves around same-sex dating, after its success in Japan as well as overseas markets.
The timing of Netflix’s announcement about renewing a series couldn’t have been better, coming just as news broke on Friday that a court in Fukuoka, Japan declared the country’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional – making it the eighth such ruling out of nine cases since 2019. This decision, which argued that the ban infringes upon citizens’ constitutional right to pursue happiness, puts more pressure on Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s government, which is a minority one, to act on marriage equality. It’s worth noting that Japan remains the only G7 nation that doesn’t legally acknowledge same-sex marriages or offer legal protections for LGBTQ+ couples.
In Japan, the initial season of “The Boyfriend” show, launched on July 9, consistently ranked high in Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 Series chart for six consecutive weeks. This popularity catapulted the nine participants into a significant increase in their career trajectories. Their social media fan bases have grown dramatically, with an average increase of approximately 120 times since the series premiere. As a result, they’ve landed TV appearances, graced magazine covers, and been recognized as influential cultural figures by various digital media platforms.
In Season 2, we’ll welcome a new group of contestants, while our beloved hosts – Magumi, Chiaki Horan, Thelma Aoyama, drag queen Durian Lollobrigida, and Yoshimi Tokui – will once again lead us through the participants’ experiences.
Netflix producer Dai Ota expresses gratitude for the show’s success as Japan’s inaugural same-sex romance reality series. “We’re thrilled to be back for another season, thanks to our audience’s support,” Ota remarks. “As the first same-sex romance reality show in Japan, we put great effort into making the narrative an accurate reflection of these relationships. In Season 1, we delved beyond mere romance, depicting their friendships and profound connections with each other, which I believe resonated deeply with viewers worldwide.
As the next season approaches, Ota assures us that they’ll maintain their genuine approach while adding fresh elements: “In Season 2, you can expect to see more of their heartfelt moments and tales of development, offered through unique viewpoints and untold backgrounds. Don’t forget to anticipate a new season filled with new cast members, a revamped Green Room, and innovative storytelling.
