Same-Sex Japanese Dating Reality Show ‘The Boyfriend’ Renewed by Netflix as Court Rules Gay Marriage Ban Unconstitutional

As someone who has always been passionate about representation and equality, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Netflix’s decision to greenlight a second season of “The Boyfriend”. Having lived in Japan for a significant portion of my life, I’ve witnessed firsthand the struggle for marriage equality in the country. So, when I heard that Fukuoka High Court had ruled against the ban on same-sex marriage, it felt like a long-awaited victory.

Netflix has approved a second season for its trailblazing Japanese reality series focused on same-sex dating, “The Boyfriend.” The decision comes after the show’s successful run, not only within Japan but also on global platforms.

As a passionate moviegoer, it feels like the universe aligned perfectly when Netflix announced the renewal of my favorite show just days after Japan’s high court in Fukuoka declared their ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. This is the eighth such ruling out of nine cases since 2019! It’s a significant step forward, as this decision highlights that the ban infringes upon citizens’ constitutional right to pursue happiness.

In Japan, the first season of “The Boyfriend” TV show, which began on July 9th, consistently ranked high on Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 Series chart for six consecutive weeks. This popularity has propelled the nine participants into a rapid rise in their careers. Their social media follower counts have skyrocketed, increasing an average of 120 times since the show’s premiere. The cast members have capitalized on their newfound fame by securing TV appearances, magazine covers, and recognition as influential cultural figures by digital media platforms.

In Season 2, you’ll meet a new group of participants, with familiar faces like Magumi, Chiaki Horan, Thelma Aoyama, drag queen Durian Lollobrigida, and Yoshimi Tokui returning to guide them along their competition path.

As a proud producer of Netflix’s groundbreaking same-sex romance reality series, I am thrilled to be back for another season. It’s all thanks to our amazing viewers that we get this opportunity. Being Japan’s first show of its kind, we were meticulous in creating an authentic narrative that truly reflects these relationships.

As the next season approaches, Ota assures us of maintaining authenticity while introducing fresh elements: “In Season 2, we’ll continue to highlight their compassionate journeys and tales of growth, offering unique insights and untold stories. Get ready for a brand-new season filled with new cast members, a revamped Green Room, and innovative storytelling.
