Sam Heughan Cast In Thriller Embassy After Outlander’s Final Season

Sam Heughan is starting a new TV project before Outlander ends. The popular fantasy series, which began in 2014 and made Heughan a well-known actor, is based on the books by Diana Gabaldon. The eighth and final season of Outlander, premiering in March, will conclude the story of beloved characters Jamie and Claire Fraser, played by Heughan and Caitríona Balfe.

Though his popular fantasy series is finishing up, Sam Heughan is already landing new roles. He’s been cast in the upcoming six-part thriller, Embassy, and will appear with Anna Kendrick and J.K. Simmons.

I’m really excited about this new film, Embassy! I heard Lena Waithe is starring as Layla, a diplomat who finds herself in a tough spot when the U.S. embassy in London is attacked. It sounds like she has to make some seriously difficult choices. Plus, I’m a big fan of Kingsley Ben-Adir, and he’s playing the U.S. ambassador. Sam Heughan is also joining the cast as Connor Wright, Layla’s ex-fiancé, who happens to be a British soldier. Apparently, Layla needs his help with a risky mission to extract someone important, even though she’s hesitant to ask him for anything, given their history. It sounds like a tense and dramatic thriller!

Rom Lotan is the creator and executive producer of Embassy, alongside John Strickland, Hester Ruoff, Bart Ruspoli, Matt Mitchell, Daniel Hetzer, Jakob Neuhausser, Justin Thomson, David Tanner, Stuart Ford, Lourdes Diaz, and Miguel A. Palos Jr. Lotan also wrote the series, and Christian Alvart and Strickland are directing.

Embassy doesn’t currently have a dedicated filming location, but production on the series will begin in London and Cologne in February.

Sam Heughan has acted in numerous films, such as When the Starlight Ends, The Spy Who Dumped Me, Bloodshot, To Olivia, SAS: Red Notice, and Love Again. Before becoming famous for his role as Jamie in the television series Outlander, he appeared in various British shows and movies. His performance in Outlander earned him a People’s Choice Award, a Saturn Award, and a Critics’ Choice Award nomination.

For seven seasons, Outlander has consistently been popular with both viewers and critics, maintaining a high Rotten Tomatoes score – currently at 90% and never dropping below 86% in any season. The show follows Claire, who falls in love after unexpectedly traveling back in time to 1743.

A new series telling the story of Jamie and Claire’s parents first aired in 2025. Season 2 of Outlander: Blood of My Blood is currently being finished after filming completed in December. We don’t yet know when it will be released.

After more than ten years, the TV show Outlander is nearing its end, and the people involved are beginning new projects. Sam Heughan, known for his role in Outlander, will continue acting on television in a thriller called Embassy, marking a shift away from fantasy stories.

Outlander season 8 premieres Friday, March 6 at 8 p.m. ET on Starz.
