Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros., says he’s motivated to continue making games by the enthusiastic requests from his fans, who are excited for the next installment to come out on the Switch 2.
Now that Sora from Kingdom Hearts has been added as the last downloadable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch, fans are excited to find out what’s next for the Kingdom Hearts series.
Honestly, it sounds like we might not have to wait too long for news. I was reading an interview with Sakurai, and he basically said he still makes games because people ask him to – that’s the biggest thing driving him. And that got me thinking… that could be a huge hint about whether we’ll ever see a new Smash game! If enough people keep showing interest, maybe he’ll be convinced to make it happen.
He explained in a recent interview, translated by Stealth40k, that he prefers creating games based on what people ask for rather than coming up with his own ideas. He finds the most enjoyment in playing games, and honestly believes he wouldn’t bother making one if no one requested it.
It’s not that I don’t care or won’t try, but I approach things pretty logically. I’m more driven by knowing there’s a need and wanting to meet it. So, I’m motivated more by what others want or expect than by my own personal feelings.

Sakurai rumored to be making a new Smash game
Sakurai briefly retired and tried being a YouTuber, then returned to work on Kirby Air Riders. He also suggested that he might work on the Super Smash Bros. series again in the future.
He jokingly claimed he couldn’t picture a future Super Smash Bros. game without him. Recognizing the series’ importance to Nintendo, he believes another installment is likely, but acknowledges it will be challenging to develop.
Rumors suggest a new Super Smash Bros. game is being developed. According to Reece ‘Kiwi Talkz’ Reilly, Masahiro Sakurai reportedly said he’d be willing to make another Smash game if he could first create a new Kirby Air Ride game.
We don’t have any details yet about a possible new Smash Bros. game for the Switch 2. It’s currently unknown whether it will be a completely new installment or an expanded version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – perhaps a “deluxe” edition – featuring additional characters and stages.
Sakurai’s thoughts on player requests are getting a lot of attention, which makes sense since fan feedback heavily influences the development of Smash games.

As a Smash player, it’s awesome seeing so many iconic characters from gaming history join the fight – Cloud, Snake, Ryu, Sephiroth, even Steve from Minecraft and Sonic! But honestly, we fans always want more, you know? There’s always someone else we’re hoping to see added to the roster.
It’s definitely possible the next Super Smash Bros. game will include popular characters like Master Chief (who Microsoft also hoped would appear) or Geno from Super Mario RPG.
It’s hard to say for sure what will happen, but given how important the Super Smash Bros. series is to Nintendo, it’s probable that they’ll release another fighting game in the style of Smash on their newest system eventually.
