Sabrina Elba Joins Cast of Lula Ali Ismaïl’s ‘Nuur’ for Scythia Films (EXCLUSIVE)

Sabrina Elba is set to be part of the ensemble for the upcoming film “Nuur,” directed by Lula Ali Ismaïl (of “Dhalinyaro” fame). This movie, being produced by Scythia Films, known for the Oscar-nominated production “The Apprentice,” also includes Omar Abdi (“The Gravedigger’s Wife”) and Hamza Fouad (“Riverdale”) in its cast.

The movie is based on the novel “The Youth of God” by Hassan Ghedi Santur, who also penned the screenplay. In this story, Nuur, our protagonist, is an intellectually gifted 17-year-old boy living in Toronto’s Somali community, specifically Dixon. Idris Elba will play Haawo, a strong and resourceful mother to Nuur and his older brother Ayuub. In her past, Haawo lived in Mogadishu, Somalia, where she was a flight attendant and wife of a successful architect. However, later in life, she finds herself battling depression due to a failed marriage and trapped in a monotonous job at Walmart. When Nuur goes missing, Haawo embarks on a mission to find him.

Elba expressed his heartfelt gratitude for being given the chance to portray Haawo in ‘Nuur.’ He considers it a privilege to team up with Lula Ali Ismail, whose work he finds incredibly inspiring. He feels truly honored to contribute to such a significant project.

The movie’s creators are Daniel Bekerman, Chris Yurkovich, and Neil Mathieson from Arbitrage Pictures, along with Jordan Hart who will be an executive producer for Scythia Films. Additionally, Michael Bronne and Bhakti Shringarpure are executive producers for Smashing Dandelions. Steve Alexander and Idylia Hachi also have executive producer roles. Telefilm Canada is one of the companies funding this production, and at present, casting is being conducted.

Actress and producer Elba gained recognition for her role in “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” a film where she starred alongside her husband, Idris Elba. Off-screen, she’s been appointed as the UN Goodwill Ambassador for IFAD since April 2020, dedicating her efforts to tackle challenges faced by rural women and girls. In terms of representation, Elba is managed by The Artists Partnership.

Recently, Scythia Films created “Endless Cookie,” an animated documentary feature from Seth Scriver and Peter Scriver, as well as executive produced “The Wedding Banquet,” a romantic comedy directed by Andrew Ahn featuring stars Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, and Bowen Yang.
