He’s now famous for playing the superhero Deadpool, but he began his career with comedic roles, like in the movie The Proposal.
The romantic comedy first came out in 2009 and was a big box office success, even though critics didn’t love it. Now, 17 years later, Ryan Reynolds’ The Proposal is popular again, this time on the streaming service Peacock, according to data from FlixPatrol.
The movie The Proposal started at number seven on Peacock’s charts on January 2nd. By the next day, it had climbed to number six. The top two spots were held by other titles.
Anne Fletcher directed The Proposal, which featured a screenplay by Peter Chiarelli. The film starred Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, with supporting performances by Malin Åkerman, Craig T. Nelson, Mary Steenburgen, and Betty White.
The romantic comedy features Sandra Bullock as Margaret Tate, who runs a book publishing company in New York City. Facing deportation to Canada when her visa runs out, she pressures her assistant, Andrew Paxton (played by Ryan Reynolds), to marry her so she can get a green card. They pretend to be a couple, even staging fake dates while visiting his hometown, to make their plan seem real.
While the actors in The Proposal received positive reviews, the movie’s story and plot were criticized for being predictable. Critics gave it a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences scored it higher at 68%. Despite the mixed reviews, The Proposal was a huge box office hit, earning $317.3 million worldwide on a budget of just $40 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
What’s Next for Ryan Reynolds?
The actor enjoyed a hugely successful 2024 with his latest film, Deadpool & Wolverine. The movie was a massive hit, breaking numerous records and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. While his future with the Deadpool character is currently uncertain, he’s expected to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Endgame alongside other popular superheroes.
Ryan Reynolds has several interesting projects coming up. While Deadpool was a huge hit, it led to him being offered many similar roles that relied on his signature comedic style. Now, he’s taking on his first truly serious villainous character in an upcoming live-action film. He’s also working on a new project where he’ll both star and be a producer.
The Proposal is streaming on Peacock.
