Ryan Murphy Captures His First Female Monster

Ryan Murphy is clearly fascinated with true crime stories and is revisiting the case of Lizzie Borden in the next season of *Monster*. Borden was famously put on trial – and found not guilty – for the 1892 murders of her father and stepmother. This isn’t the first time Murphy has explored Borden’s story; a character on his show *American Horror Story: Asylum* back in 2012 shared details of her life. It seems the Lizzie Borden case has stayed with Murphy for quite some time.

Below, everything we know about Monster season four.

Who is in the cast?

Ella Beatty, the daughter of actors Annette Bening and Warren Beatty, will portray Lizzie Borden. Beatty is a Juilliard graduate who recently stepped into the Broadway play *Appropriate* after Elle Fanning. She has also worked with director Ryan Murphy before, appearing in his series *Feud: Capote vs. the Swans* as Truman Capote’s assistant, Kerry O’Shea.

Naomi Watts will star as Lizzie Borden, and she’ll be joined by Charlie Hunnam, who previously played Ed Gein and will now portray Lizzie’s father, Andrew Borden. Rebecca Hall, known for her role in *Peter Hujar’s Day*, will play Lizzie’s stepmother, Abby Borden. Billie Lourd will play Lizzie’s sister, Emma, and Vicky Krieps (*Phantom Thread*) will be Bridget Sullivan, the maid who was the only other person present when Andrew and Abby were killed. Jessica Barden will play Nance O’Neill, an actress who was a friend of Lizzie’s and rumored to be her lover.

What do we know about season four?

In a recent interview with *Variety*, Ryan Murphy discussed the upcoming season of his show, revealing it will explore the stories of several female killers from history. He specifically mentioned Aileen Wuornos, a serial killer known for murdering seven clients while working as a sex worker – a story previously depicted in the Oscar-winning film *Monster* starring Charlize Theron. Murphy also shared plans to focus on Elizabeth Báthory, a Hungarian noblewoman accused of torturing and killing hundreds of young women in the late 1500s and early 1600s.

When’s the release date?

Production on the show is underway, as confirmed by *The Hollywood Reporter* on October 9th. Past seasons have typically premiered in late September or early October, and new content featuring Charlie Hunnam will be available soon.
