Ryan Gosling Says Being a Teacher Is a “Superpower” in ‘Project Hail Mary’ [Exclusive]

The highly anticipated sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary is set to release soon, and many are predicting it will be the first major hit and even the best film of 2026. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher who used to be a molecular biologist. He’s recruited to join a team of the world’s top scientists to tackle a massive crisis: the sun, and other stars, are losing their brightness. Unless they can find a solution, humanity faces extinction within decades.

Ryland is sent on a deep space mission to study a star that’s behaving strangely – it hasn’t begun to fade like others. He’s tasked with discovering what makes it unique and sharing his findings. During his journey, he encounters an intelligent alien resembling a spider, who is investigating the same star. This alien has a rocky outer shell, so Ryland nicknames him Rocky, and the two form an unlikely but strong bond. When MovieWeb recently spoke with Gosling about the film, we asked him how his background as a teacher informed Ryland’s connection with his new alien companion.

He often uses his teaching abilities to help people communicate and understand each other – to get on the same wavelength. Despite being completely unprepared for space travel, his teaching skills are actually his greatest strength. It’s a surprising asset, but it really is what makes him effective.

MovieWeb pointed out that the character Ryland demonstrates a lot of patience while overcoming communication challenges, a skill that would be valuable for a teacher. Gosling agreed, acknowledging the importance of patience. It’s positive to see a popular film like this recognize and highlight the often overlooked contributions of teachers, who are essential to society.

The movie Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir’s popular novel of the same name. Weir is also known for The Martian, which became a successful 2015 film starring Matt Damon. Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay for Cloverfield, wrote the screenplay for this adaptation. The directing team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for The Lego Movie, has taken over from Ridley Scott. Early reviews have been very positive, suggesting they’ve done justice to Weir’s original story.
