Ryan Gosling will be leading a major film expected in 2026, but he still fondly remembers his acclaimed performance in the 2016 movie La La Land, which earned him an Oscar nomination.
The popular, Oscar-nominated musical rom-com is turning ten this year. Before his new movie, Project Hail Mary, comes out on March 20th, Ryan Gosling found a clever way to celebrate both films – and finally corrected a well-known error on one of his old movie posters.
La La Land’s Poster Haunts Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling playfully referenced his past film, La La Land, to promote his new movie, Project Hail Mary. He recreated the La La Land poster, but replaced Emma Stone with his dog, Rocky. The post included a caption – “A city of stars shining just for them” – a quote from the song “City of Stars” in the musical.
The new poster keeps the original background but changes the tagline. Instead of the lyric “Here’s to the fools who dream” from the song of the same name, it now says “Believe in the Hail Mary.”
The latest poster gives Ryan Gosling a chance to correct the now-famous mistake with his hand, which he jokingly refers to as the “La La Hand.” He shared in a behind-the-scenes video from the photoshoot, “This is my last-ditch effort to fix it, and my friend Rocky is going to help.”
As the actor performed the scene, he checked with his crew about how his hand looked, and they told him it was perfect.
One particularly famous image from the movie shows Sebastian and Mia, played by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, sharing their first musical scene, “A Lovely Night.” It captures Gosling walking Stone to her car after a party, with the lights of Los Angeles and the stars twinkling behind them. Gosling recently told The Wall Street Journal Magazine that this poster still feels very impactful to him.
When asked if he’d revisit any of his roles, Ryan Gosling mentioned a specific moment from La La Land that has stayed with him. Interestingly, it wasn’t about his acting – he was already nominated for an Oscar for that performance.
He described a dance scene with Emma Stone, which unexpectedly became the movie’s poster image. They were instructed to raise their hands, but he decided to position his hand differently, thinking it would look better, even though others disagreed. He was confident his idea was the cooler choice.
Gosling jokingly said that looking back at the promotional photos, he wished they’d used a different pose. He felt the original one lacked energy, and playfully nicknamed it ‘La La Hand,’ then teased himself, saying ‘Hamburger hands Gosling over here.’
Ryan Gosling Reunited With La La Land Director for His First Space Movie
In the sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling plays Dr. Ryland Grace, a biologist who wakes up on a spaceship with amnesia. He gradually pieces together his mission: he’s Earth’s last hope to stop a mysterious phenomenon that’s causing the sun to fade. During his journey, Ryland encounters an alien named Rocky, and the two work together to save both their worlds.
Before the release of his new film, Ryan Gosling revisited his collaboration with La La Land director Damien Chazelle for a movie about Neil Armstrong. The film focuses on Armstrong’s life and the years he spent preparing for the historic Apollo 11 mission to the Moon.
You can rent or buy La La Land on all your favorite digital platforms. And Project Hail Mary will be in theaters starting March 20th.
