Ryan Coogler talks Chadwick Boseman’s passing
Ryan Coogler recently shared how Chadwick Boseman continues to impact his life and work. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the director discussed their time working together and the valuable lessons he learned from Boseman.
Ryan Coogler remembers feeling immense pressure while making the first Black Panther movie. He was so worried about the film’s success that he didn’t fully appreciate Chadwick Boseman’s performance. He said he was young, stressed, exhausted, and doubtful the movie would succeed, and that these private artistic conversations with Boseman will always be special to him. Now, looking back, he regrets not savoring the experience more fully.
Coogler also admired Boseman’s consistently strong performances. He fondly remembered watching Boseman act, saying he never gave a bad take. Boseman’s death made Coogler reflect on how he appreciates those moments, realizing he often didn’t fully enjoy them because he was too self-critical and felt unworthy.
The director explained that his past experiences now shape how he works on every film set. He shared that he’ll carry the lessons he learned from a person named Chad with him always, emphasizing the importance of focusing on the positive, appreciating what matters, and not letting self-doubt or negativity ruin time spent with his actors.
Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020 after privately fighting cancer, which was a devastating loss for everyone involved in the making of Wakanda Forever when director Ryan Coogler resumed work on the film. He also shared how the team continued filming while still coping with their grief.
