Director Ryan Coogler shared that the profound impact of Chadwick Boseman’s death was a major reason he made the film Sinners. Coogler and Boseman previously collaborated on the popular Marvel movie Black Panther. Boseman tragically passed away from colon cancer in 2020. Following his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Coogler directed Sinners, which proved to be very successful.
The director recently confessed he hadn’t fully appreciated Chadwick Boseman, simply assuming he’d always be there. In an interview with The New York Times, he discussed making Sinners and how Boseman inspired him to take on the project, which unexpectedly became a major success in 2025 after he’d directed two Black Panther films.
“I took him for granted. I figured he’d always be around.”
Following Chadwick Boseman’s death and his work on Wakanda Forever, Ryan Coogler was eager to begin Sinners immediately. He was afraid of losing the opportunity to create, feeling acutely aware of life’s fragility. Boseman tragically passed away at 43, and Coogler, at 39, realized he wasn’t much younger. This made him determined not to take anything for granted.
I was worried about losing the opportunity to connect with and expand my reach to the audience who has been so supportive.
Coogler now really enjoys life and cherishes the people around him – his friends, family, and everyone he knows. He says simply, “Seeing my friends always makes me happy.”
“Anytime I get to see my friends, I’m happy.”
He’s also very intentional about his career, focusing on what’s truly important to him. For instance, the director of Sinners decided not to become a member of the Academy voters. He prefers to concentrate on making films and supporting his former school, the SC School of Cinematic Arts, rather than dealing with the “stressful” process of judging awards.
This isn’t about disliking anyone. I just don’t like being put in a position where I have to choose the ‘best’ option – it’s really stressful, even when nothing important is riding on it. People focus on the glamour of movies – the fancy events and red carpets – but it’s actually a lot of hard work from everyday people who make them happen.
He also decided to make the film Sinners—a project that was very important to him—as quickly as possible, as part of shifting his priorities.
The movie Sinners follows two brothers who, in 1932, try to escape the mafia and open their own club back home in Mississippi. But their plans are disrupted when vampires begin terrorizing the town. The film is an original story written by the director, a refreshing change in Hollywood, especially considering his work on films like Creed and Black Panther.
The movie Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.
The movie Sinners was a critical and popular success, earning a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Released in April 2025, it made $367 million worldwide. Currently, it’s up for seven awards at the Golden Globes and received an impressive 17 nominations from the Critics’ Choice Awards.
After going through a really tough time and facing some serious tragedy, Ryan Coogler’s perspective completely shifted, and that’s what ultimately allowed him to create Sinners. He’s made a conscious decision to appreciate everything, and honestly, it’s a really inspiring message that I think we can all learn from. It’s a reminder not to take anything for granted.
