As a film enthusiast with a profound respect for the craft and its creators, I find myself deeply moved by the story of Halyna Hutchins, a talented cinematographer whose life was tragically cut short on the set of “Rust.” The tribute to her in the movie’s credits, accompanied by her poignant quote, serves as a testament to her spirit and her unwavering commitment to making things better.
The opening of Alec Baldwin’s Western movie “Rust” starts with a heartfelt tribute, “For Halyna,” honoring cinematographer Halyna Hutchins who tragically passed away due to a gun incident during the filming on location in New Mexico, October 2021.
As a movie enthusiast, I find myself often asking, “How can we improve this film?” – a question echoed by the insightful words of Hutchins. This inquiry has been on my mind throughout the screening of this recent cinematic release.
Halyna Hutchins’ role as director of photography was recognized as “Halyna Hutchins, ASC,” a title given to those invited to join the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), a prestigious honorary society. Unfortunately, she received this recognition posthumously. At the time of her tragic accident, Hutchins was recognized as an emerging talent, with credits in films like “Archenemy” from 2020 and “Blindfire.
The movie titled ‘Rust’ made its debut on Wednesday at the EnergaCamerimage international cinematography film festival in Toruń, Poland. Prior to the screening, director Joel Souza, who was involved in an accident, provided a brief introduction. Cinematographer Bianca Cline, who finished the project and is credited for her work in the movie’s cinematography, also attended.
At Camerimage, Souza shared with EbMaster the reason behind including the quote “What can we do to make this better?” in the credits. He clarified that it was something she often said, and later took on a deeper significance. Essentially, he suggested that by adopting this mindset for life, people could significantly improve the world around them.
Moreover, what she said wasn’t prompted by that specific topic – she was discussing the frame instead; however, her life mirrored those very qualities. She exhibited kindness, treated others with respect, and strove to assist others whenever possible. I believe this altruistic approach to life serves as a suitable tribute to her memory, encapsulated in that quote.
The producer and actor Alec Baldwin, who was in possession of the prop gun during the unfortunate incident, was not extended an invitation to attend the festival, as confirmed by a representative from the event. Although Baldwin faced charges for manslaughter, the case was subsequently dropped due to the prosecution’s failure to disclose crucial evidence.
In the movie’s credits, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the “Rust” armorer currently serving a 18-month sentence due to Hutchins’ death, was not acknowledged.
Halyna’s spouse, Matthew Hutchins, is credited as an executive producer. This position was granted to him due to the terms of a settlement agreement.
Displaying the film at Camerimage stirred up quite a debate. Mostly, those against it believed that the production should not have been completed, and found the screening to be questionable or ill-timed.
Festival director Marek Żydowicz issued a statement that explained, “This screening is primarily held to acknowledge and celebrate Halyna’s work, her talent, and the artistic accomplishments she achieved.
On Tuesday, a statement was released by Hutchins’ lawyer, Gloria Allred, representing Olga Solovey, who is not involved in the lawsuit against the production and actor Alec Baldwin. Olga Solovey herself did not attend the event.
