A strange scene in Russia is circulating online: a police officer was caught on video playing a virtual reality game on a suspect’s headset while other officers made an arrest.
In St. Petersburg, Russian police arrested a man from Belarus who is wanted back home for avoiding the draft. Reports indicate he allegedly failed to comply with mandatory military service.
Instead of concentrating on the arrest, one of the officers momentarily put on the VR headset and started playing Beat Saber, a rhythm game, which led to a bizarre moment caught on camera.
Gazeta, a Russian news source, reports that the arrest happened at a local café – a popular spot for people to meet, socialize, and play games. Police took the Belarusian citizen into custody while he was celebrating his birthday with his friends.
Police officer starts playing Beat Saber during raid
While two officers were arresting the suspect, another officer apparently tried out the virtual reality game Beat Saber. He put on the VR headset and started making slicing motions with his arms, as if playing the game, while the arrest was happening.
A video showing the arrest quickly went viral online, with many people surprised to see an officer playing virtual reality in the background while the arrest was happening.
According to The Moscow Times, the cafe staff even helped the officer adjust the game’s settings.
Video footage reveals the officer actively moving and gesturing as if playing the popular virtual reality game, wearing a headset, while the person they’ve detained stands close by, watched by other officers.

The man from Belarus was wanted in his home country because he didn’t report for military service, which is against the law there. Local news sources say he was arrested in Russia for this reason.
It’s currently unknown if the officer involved will be disciplined, but the strange incident has quickly spread online. Interestingly, the man’s friends continued celebrating his birthday with a party even after he was arrested.
Police officers playing video games while working isn’t a new issue; it’s happened before.
In 2018, police officers investigating a noise complaint about a video game session were surprised to find themselves joining the players for a round of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Two police officers lost their jobs after prioritizing catching a Pokemon – a Snorlax – in the popular game Pokemon Go, instead of responding to a robbery that was happening.
