More than ten years after it first came out, Russell Crowe’s movie Noah, which sparked a lot of discussion, is now a popular success on Netflix around the world.
The 2014 film Noah, inspired by the biblical story of Noah’s Ark, earned over $359 million worldwide. However, it also faced criticism for its perceived environmental message and for drawing heavily on texts outside the Bible, such as the Book of Enoch.
As of February 13th, the movie Noah is currently the 5th most popular film on Netflix worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. It’s behind State of Fear, Yoh! Bestie, Overboard, and Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich, but ahead of films like The Investigation of Lucy Letby, Norbit, Twisters, The Rip, and Even If This Love Disappears Tonight, which is in 10th place.
The film Noah is currently a top 10 hit on Netflix in 45 countries around the world, including regions in the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. While it’s not available for streaming on Netflix in the US, you can rent or buy it on Amazon Prime Video starting at $3.99.
Directed by Darren Aronofsky (known for Black Swan), Noah tells the biblical story of Noah, played by Russell Crowe, who is tasked by God with building a massive ark to save his family and pairs of all the Earth’s animals from a devastating flood. Aronofsky co-wrote the screenplay with Ari Handel, drawing inspiration from the Book of Genesis.
In addition to Russell Crowe as the main character, the film Noah features an impressive cast including Academy Award winners Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) and Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs, The Father), along with Ray Winstone, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Douglas Booth, Finn Wittrock, Gavin Casalegno, Marton Csokas, and Madison Davenport. Frank Langella, Nick Nolte, Mark Margolis, and Kevin Durand provide voices for the film.
Although it sparked some debate, the movie Noah generally received positive reviews from critics, earning a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers highlighted its impressive visuals, strong acting, and fresh take on the classic biblical story for modern viewers. However, audiences were more divided, giving it a 41% rating.
Despite earning $359.2 million worldwide, Darren Aronofsky’s biggest box office hit, Noah wasn’t as profitable as it seems. With a production cost between $125 and $160 million, the film needed to gross around $400 million just to cover its expenses.
The film was prevented from being shown in China because of its religious content. It was also banned in many Muslim countries because its depiction of important religious figures was considered to go against Islamic beliefs.
The film also sparked discussion among Christians, mainly because it used texts beyond the Bible – particularly the Book of Enoch – instead of sticking only to the story of Genesis. It borrowed significantly from Enoch’s account of the flood, featuring details like the Nephilim.
Despite being a controversial film due to its religious themes, Noah continues to be popular worldwide. Over a decade after its release, it’s still being watched, discussed, and reinterpreted by audiences on platforms like Netflix.
