Russell Crowe Heads Down Under for ‘Bear Country’ Shoot, With the Gold Coast Standing in for Los Angeles

Russell Crowe, who has won an Oscar, plans to head back to Queensland, Australia, as he gears up for the filming of “Bear Country,” an action-packed thriller. Filming for this project is scheduled to start in February, according to Screen Queensland’s announcement on Thursday.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be working once more with director Derrick Borte, the man behind “Unhinged,” on an exciting new project. He’s taking the helm this time, with Daniel Forte, from a script they’ve written together, based on Thomas Perry’s novel “Strip.” We last joined forces for “American Dreamer.” It’s going to be a fantastic ride!

In the story “Bear Country,” Crowe introduces us to Manco Kapak, an experienced nightclub owner, who was looking forward to a serene retirement with his partner. However, these plans are abruptly disrupted when a mysterious thief, wearing a mask, targets his establishment for a robbery.

The project, projected to generate around AUD11.9 million ($7.4 million) in economic benefits for the area, plans to hire about 95 local residents. The Gold Coast will serve as a stand-in for Los Angeles, leveraging its varied locations.

John-Paul Langbroek, Queensland’s Arts Minister, stated that the state’s global standing as a powerful production center is increasing more and more,” he emphasized, highlighting the crucial role of the Production Attraction Strategy in bringing the project to fruition.

Screen Queensland’s CEO, Jacqui Feeney, emphasized the program’s dedication to fostering new talent by offering practical, on-set learning experiences under experienced professionals, via their Attachment Program.

Mark Fasano, who’s working with Nickel City Pictures and A Higher Standard on a project, spoke highly of Queensland’s production facilities. “The Gold Coast in Queensland provides an unrivaled mix of various shooting spots, skilled local teams, and imaginative creatives,” commented the producer of “Marlowe”.

The upcoming project signals Crowe’s comeback to Queensland, where he last worked on “Land of Bad” at the end of 2022. Alongside Crowe, producers like Jeffrey Greenstein (“The Hitman’s Bodyguard”), Deborah Glover (“Sleeping Dogs”), and a duo from Life & Soul Pictures named Mark Bower and Bruno Mustic, are also involved in this production.

The location ‘Bear Country’ is supported financially by the City of Gold Coast and the Australian Government, thanks to the Location Offset program.
