This week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race continued a long-standing tradition: a challenge that often feels unfairly judged. Fans have frequently criticized the makeover challenge, pointing out that the judges, particularly Michelle Visage, sometimes seem to use the phrase ‘family resemblance‘ without a clear reason. Viewers have questioned past eliminations – like Loosey LaDuca’s – when the contestants looked very similar, and debated wins – such as Jaida Essence Hall’s over Crystal Method – where one look was arguably more innovative. The makeover challenge is often considered the most inconsistent and frustrating part of the show’s judging process.
This week on Drag Race, the judges seemed to ignore previous criticism and focused entirely on ‘family resemblance’ – the idea that queens should have a consistent look throughout the competition. RuPaul and Michelle Visage constantly emphasized this in their critiques. Essentially, it feels like they’re asking for similar outfits made in different styles. Queens like Sam Starr, Jaida Essence Hall, and Anetra have succeeded with this approach, but it’s not the same as genuinely creating a family resemblance. Surprisingly, many queens haven’t caught on. What’s even stranger is that some queens tried to make their makeover partners look like them, and still didn’t get credit for family resemblance – it’s a confusing expectation!
I understand the decision, even if it’s tough. This show sometimes has to cut contestants to narrow down the strongest group, and unfortunately, Discord was eliminated this week. I actually thought her makeover was well-done – the faces of her and her partner looked very alike, even with different colored outfits. However, she’d been struggling to compete with the top six since the non-elimination episode, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected. I wish the judges would just be straightforward with her and explain that her performance hasn’t been as strong as the others, and she consistently falls short of the top. That would be fair! It felt frustrating when she and Jane both created nearly identical looks to their partners, only for it to be dismissed. It’s a bit unfair, but maybe the show needs those moments to make tough choices.
The episode started with everyone feeling down about Kenya leaving. Honestly, I was a little worried about Nini. She was really upset about being in the bottom, which shows she holds herself to a high standard, but it made me think she might struggle as the competition gets harder. She’s incredibly talented, but I’m still trying to figure out exactly who Nini Coco is as a performer. It reminds me of when Q was doing so well at the start, then really hit a rough patch later on. I think Nini’s got a better head on her shoulders, though, and definitely won’t be relying on anything like a blaccent.
The queens competed in a rodeo-themed mini-challenge that involved quick drag for the first time this season, and the results were hilarious. I’ve been loving these mini-challenges lately, and this one was particularly fun. What a queen chooses to wear during quick drag really says a lot about her – I immediately thought of Joey Jay’s boy drag look in a past challenge and how it signaled she should go home. Discord won the challenge for being the fastest, earning her a $2,500 prize. That’s amazing, considering how expensive those runway looks can be!
This week’s design challenge focuses on giving queer cowboys a fresh look. Because she won the smaller challenge, the host paired the designers together, and unfortunately for Jane, she ended up with the oldest cowboy to makeover. Otherwise, the pairings seem reasonable.
The main plotlines for each pairing is as follows:
Jane’s really stressing herself out, which isn’t surprising considering her past performance and her desire to support her older partner.
Discord is determined to impress and believes she can create a stunning look for herself and her partner. However, during a rehearsal with RuPaul, she receives a warning: her planned theme of a ‘goth schoolgirl’ paired with a ‘preppy schoolgirl’ might not showcase enough family resemblance. Despite this advice, Discord remains confident in her vision and proceeds with her plan.
Juicy is matched with a partner who has a very different build, and she’ll need to navigate that dynamic. She’s also still learning to confidently express herself.
Darlene meets someone really lively and energetic, but she initially wonders if he’ll appreciate her playful, somewhat wild side. Luckily, he does!
Myki’s partner is a fascinating character with a complex past. He used to perform in drag but stopped due to difficult experiences and a desire to explore his identity as a man. While he’s clearly grown a lot, he’s now hesitant about returning to drag, making him the most compelling person in this episode.
Nini’s biggest challenge is transforming a veteran who’s deeply affected by his experiences and uncomfortable with expressing his feminine side. He’s not a natural performer like the other contestants, but he’s exactly the type of person who could really benefit from this experience – and RuPaul sees the potential for a powerful story. If Nini can help him open up and reveal a stunning transformation, similar to how a shy dancer became the unforgettable Lazy Susan, she’ll have a strong chance of winning.
The Werk Room continues to be a lot of fun, and this season’s queens are a particularly enjoyable group. They’re all good at mentoring their drag daughters and helping them understand the craft. While Juicy might struggle a bit – it’s often hard for newer queens without much life experience, like we’ve seen with Noir London and Luxx – she’s still a sweet and entertaining presence. The show also includes fun little moments, like the cow-wrangling scenes, making it a genuinely enjoyable watch.
I think runway shows should include more creative moments – it feels like a lost chance when they just have models walk straight through. My suggestion? Always find a way to incorporate a fun, memorable performance, like a playful ‘passing of the brooms’ routine.
Nini’s performance didn’t go well. Her butterfly and caterpillar costume idea just didn’t work – it really wasn’t good, unfortunately. The headpieces were unattractive, and the overall look felt uncoordinated. Law was particularly bothered that the caterpillar resembled a bee. Honestly, if someone needs to work on expressing their personality and confidence, making them dress as an unattractive bug is the last thing they need. Even though Nini is a skilled seamstress, this just wasn’t a good fit.
Myki is doing incredibly well! It definitely helps that her daughter’s partner is so comfortable and skilled performing in heels, but the dresses are beautiful and the makeup is fantastic. Myki’s distinctive painting style is a huge asset – you can instantly tell her daughter is a Myki Meeks creation. The judges might have focused on how much the daughter resembles her mother, but Michelle seems fixated on that. Overall, it’s a fantastic performance, and Myki deserves credit for helping her daughter rediscover her confidence and embrace her femininity. Everyone did a great job.
I have mixed feelings about Juicy’s performance. Her costumes are cute, and the Carmen Miranda look is a good direction for her as she develops her style. However, I think her makeup was the weakest of the night. While the simple nose worked on her previous look, it didn’t quite fit the cowboy character and made his face seem unbalanced. It also looked like she just drew on a frown. I can see why she received some positive feedback, but technically, her work wasn’t as strong as some of the other contestants.
I disagree with the criticism Jane received this week. While she’s not a standout performer, the idea that Michelle couldn’t recognize a family connection because of their dress colors is absurd. They share the same hair color and move in the same way, which is especially notable considering Jane is the oldest. I don’t think it’s amazing, but it’s certainly not poor.
Honestly, I feel the same way about Discord. It just bothers me that everyone looks so… identical! Why can’t sisters on the show express themselves with different makeup choices? I mean, lots of sisters do wear different colors, so it’s definitely possible. While the looks were fine, ignoring RuPaul’s critiques is always a gamble. But really, I think Discord’s biggest problem this week isn’t her makeup at all – it’s that she hasn’t been consistently strong for the past eleven weeks. That’s the real issue, not a little bit of matching eyeshadow.
Darlene truly shines in this round. She paired up with the most energetic contestant and skillfully channeled that energy, creating a hilarious and perfectly matched duo – two bingo-loving partygoers in Vegas! It’s a really fun, lighthearted, and charming performance. Throughout the competition, Darlene has consistently excelled at developing memorable characters, and this challenge allows her talent to really take center stage. She delivers a fantastic performance.
In the end, Myki, Juicy, and Darlene were the top performers, and Myki ultimately won. While I think that’s a fair result, it’s funny because after weeks of hoping Myki would win, I actually think Darlene deserved it. Jane, Nini, and Discord were at the bottom, with Nini and Discord clearly the weakest. They had to lip-sync to Ariana Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends,” which wasn’t a good song choice at all. Nini performed it confidently and with a lot of energy, but the whole lip-sync was a bit of a letdown. It’s strange they picked that song when options like “Bye” and “The Boy Is Mine” would have been much more exciting. Ultimately, Discord was eliminated, which was the right decision, even though it took a bit of drama to get there.
And also on Untucked…
The girls spent time with the cowboys, and everyone had a really great time. Jane was upset about receiving some minor criticism, which wasn’t a surprise. Meanwhile, both Myki and Darlene realized they would be sticking with Jane until the very end.
I haven’t watched Danielle Pinnock’s show, Ghosts, but I’ve heard it’s good. I think she’s absolutely wonderful whenever she appears on screen.
The girls don’t seem to have a strong connection with Nini, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing – it’s just an interesting dynamic. They all acknowledge her talent, but they don’t seem to want to compete with her in the final round.
The season ended with a combined reunion and finale, which was a good move considering Drag Race finales often disappoint. The season nine finale is a prime example – it’s hard to sit through the first hour without fast-forwarding to the lip syncs! I was thrilled Gawdland won. Her first lip sync against Mariah was incredibly close, but Gawdland clearly had more drive. Mariah seemed content with having a strong season overall. The competition between Fontana and Kate highlighted Fontana’s tendency to be a bit scattered on stage; while energetic, Kate performed with more polish. Ultimately, the final lip sync came down to a preference for powerful, seductive performance versus campy, comedic character work. I personally prefer the former, which is why I was so happy for Gawdland. Seeing her reaction to winning was incredibly touching, and it was clear how much it meant to her and to the entire country of Thailand. It was a genuinely heartwarming moment.
I’m on vacation now, but next week I’ll be sharing a new installment of ‘Gay Thoughts From Gay People.’ This time, it’s extra special because my coworker, Rebecca Alter, is the subject! I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone thinks.
It’s pretty obvious now that the competition really has three frontrunners: Myki, Jane, and Darlene. While Nini or Juicy might do well, their presence wouldn’t add much to a final showdown between those three powerhouses.
