According to the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, additional information about the gameplay mechanics has been disclosed. While the fundamental aspect remains farming, this new installment introduces two significant changes compared to previous games in the series: The main character will now be able to employ dance moves for a broad spectrum of crop management tasks, such as watering and harvesting. Additionally, each village location will be associated with a particular season, which will remain unchanged throughout the year.
Furthermore, the magazine disclosed 12 characters who can potentially be chosen for marriage and having children, although there are more to come. This unique feature was not incorporated in the original numbered series (however, it had a similar aspect in Rune Factory Oceans / Tides of Destiny*), but Marvelous plans to introduce this feature so that the character whom the player did not initially select will still be an option for marriage within the game. In other words, if the player chooses Subaru, they can also marry Kaguya, and conversely, if they choose Kaguya, Subaru becomes a potential spouse as well.
Previously in Rune Factory games, the character you didn’t initially choose for your protagonist wouldn’t factor into the story. However, in this new installment, Rune Factory Oceans / Tides of Destiny, the character left unchosen will become a potential romantic interest! Although the game allows you to play as either Aden (male) or Sonja (female), with both characters being capable of marriage, it’s noteworthy that you start only as Aden by default. Consequently, this game doesn’t technically offer a choice for your protagonist at the outset.
The other 12 marriage candidates are as follows:
- Hina: A were-animal vixen who works as an archaeologist and visits Azuma via Mauro’s airship.
- Iroha: The poster girl of the Iroha Teahouse in the Spring Village.
- Matsuri: An Azuma goddess who manages Summer and Swords.
- Ulalaka: An Azuma goddess who manages Spring and Fun.
- Kanata: The primary deity of Azuma who manages Heaven and Light.
- Clarice: A foreign military leader who initially acts hostile to the protagonist.
- Mauro: A foreign adventurer who travels around the world with an airship.
- Murasame: A samurai who focuses on training and collecting swords while traveling around Azuma.
- Kurama: An Azuma god who manages Autumn and Wind.
- Fubuki: An Azuma were-animal god who manages Winter and Water.
- Kai: An ogre god who rules the Underworld.
- Ikaruga: An Onmyoji diviner sent over by the Shogunate.
Additionally, the main site mentions two other characters who could potentially be marriage partners, though this requires a separate purchase of DLC. In any case, if you don’t have the DLC, they will simply function as regular characters you can interact with.
- Pilika: A hunter who hails from the lands north of Azuma.
- Cuilang: A quiet mechanical expert who lives in the Autumn Village.
I’m beyond excited to share with you that Marvelous has just released an official trailer for the upcoming Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma! You can catch a glimpse of it right below. This new game will be available globally, and you can get your hands on it for Nintendo Switch or PC through Steam. I can’t wait to jump into this adventure!
