Last year, people began speculating about an anime movie based on Honkai Star Rail, supposedly being made by a major Japanese animation studio. Now, new rumors are circulating with some updated information.
Rumors and previous leaks suggest that an anime movie based on Honkai Star Rail is in early development at Studio MAPPA. This is the studio behind popular anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.
Hoyoverse and Mappa are collaborating on a Honkai: Star Rail animated project. The director is Yuzuru Tachikawa, known for his work on Mob Psycho 100. He also contributed to the storyboard for the Chainsaw Man movie. Interestingly, this director accurately predicted Tatsuya Yoshihara would direct the Chainsaw Man movie a year ago.

Yuzuru Tachikawa, known for directing popular anime like Mob Psycho 100 and his work on the Chainsaw Man Movie storyboard, will direct the new anime movie.
Although we should be skeptical of unconfirmed reports, an Honkai Star Rail anime movie isn’t unlikely. Some sources suggest the Chinese government previously contacted HoYoverse with the goal of boosting Shanghai’s profile in the film industry.
If the rumors are correct, we might get a sneak peek or official news about this during the 2026 anniversary celebration for Honkai Star Rail.
I’m still really hoping we get an anime for Genshin Impact! It’s been a while since that first teaser dropped back in 2022, and they did say it would be a long-term project, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they’re actually working on more than one anime at the same time!
