The family of legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Roy Orbison, famous for songs such as “Oh, Pretty Woman,” “Crying,” “Only the Lonely” and “In Dreams,” has teamed up with Compelling Pictures, an independent film production and financing company, to create a movie and documentary about the life and career of this talented singer-songwriter.
Titled “You Got It,” reminiscent of Roy Orbison’s 1988 hit, this upcoming film is not a typical biography but rather an exploration of his romantic life. The narrative will predominantly revolve around Orbison’s relationship with his wife Barbara, who was not just his spouse but also his manager, significantly contributing to his career resurgence in the years leading up to his untimely death at 52, on December 6, 1988. Barbara Orbison passed away in 2011.
Denis O’Sullivan (from “Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Jeff Kalligheri (of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”) will take on the production role for Compelling Pictures. Alex Orbison, Roy Orbison Jr., and Wesley Orbison, through their company Roy’s Boys, along with Joshua Mosshart, will serve as executive producers. Additionally, Steven Garcia, Ori Allon, Janice Beard, Tanner Beard, Lexie Beard, and Dennis Casali will join them in the executive producer position.
Denis O’Sullivan (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Jeff Kalligheri (“I Wanna Dance With Somebody”) are set to produce for Compelling Pictures. The Orbison family, including Alex Orbison, Roy Orbison Jr., and Wesley Orbison from their production company Roy’s Boys, along with Joshua Mosshart, will also executive-produce. Steven Garcia, Ori Allon, Janice Beard, Tanner Beard, Lexie Beard, and Dennis Casali are additionally named as executive producers for the project.
The Orbison family expressed their joy in finding the ideal collaborators with Compelling Pictures for the Roy Orbison biopic. According to them, Denis and Jeff’s concept for portraying Roy’s life journey is simply amazing.
Roy Orbison, undeniably one of rock music’s iconic figures, was renowned for his powerful, majestic voice and 1960s hits such as “Oh, Pretty Woman,” “Crying,” “Only the Lonely,” “Blue Bayou,” “Dream Baby,” “It’s Over” and “In Dreams.” However, his life was marred by a series of tragedies. In 1966, his wife Claudette was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident, and two years later, his two eldest sons perished in a house fire outside Nashville. Despite these hardships, he continued his work and married Barbara in 1969, but his career saw a decline in the 1970s.
Over the next ten years, his popular songs started being remade by various artists such as Don McLean (who had a hit in 1980 with “Crying”) and Van Halen (“Oh, Pretty Woman”), earning him his first Grammy in 1981 for a duet with Emmylou Harris on “That Lovin’ You Feeling Again”. In 1986, his hit “In Dreams” was prominently showcased in David Lynch’s movie “Blue Velvet”, leading him and Barbara to relocate to Malibu. There, he mingled with local celebrities like Bob Dylan (with whom he had previously met in the early ’60s), Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and together they teamed up with George Harrison to create the Traveling Wilburys – a sort of supergroup whose catchy tunes resulted in their successful self-titled album released in 1988.
Approximately at the same period, he was honored by being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by lifelong admirer Bruce Springsteen. In his speech, Springsteen mentioned that when composing his hit song “Born to Run,” he aimed for a record with lyrics akin to Bob Dylan, a sound similar to Phil Spector, but above all, he desired to sing like Roy Orbison. It’s well-known that no one sings quite like Roy Orbison. Orbison finished his comeback solo album, titled “Mystery Girl,” in November of 1988, only to pass away unexpectedly due to a heart attack the following month.
In a combined statement, Compelling Pictures expressed: “Roy Orbison is an exceptional artist who holds a cherished spot in our affections, not just as our favorite singer but also as a representation of human spirit’s remarkable power and tenacity. It has been a privilege getting to know Wesley, Roy Jr, and Alex, along with their families, and we are confident that this heartwarming tale about Roy and Barbara – filled with laughter, friction, and raw emotion, beautifully captured through these amazing songs – will soar as high as one of Roy’s legendary notes.
