Ronnie Yeskel, ‘Pulp Fiction’ Casting Director, Dies at 76

Ronnie Yeskel, the casting director behind “Pulp Fiction,” “Reservoir Dogs,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” passed away on January 4 at The Motion Picture & Television Fund Retirement Home in Woodland Hills following a long struggle with cancer. Her death was confirmed by AMPAS Governor Richard Hicks, and she was 76 years old.

Yeskel’s casting career extended over three decades, encompassing projects from both film and television. She teamed up with Quentin Tarantino on “Pulp Fiction” and “Reservoir Dogs,” while her other 90s films included “Bean,” “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” and “Hope Floats.” During the early 2000s, Yeskel contributed to “Blade Trinity,” “Orphan,” and cast Kieran Culkin in his debut leading role in “Igby Goes Down.

Matt O’Toole, a close friend and fellow actor, remarked about Ronnie, ‘Her enthusiasm and skill touched numerous lives and careers.’ She consistently advocated for actors with admiration and kindness. Her spirit was always radiant with joy.’

Born and raised in New Jersey, Yeskel nurtured an early love for New York’s theater scene. Upon graduation from the University of Maryland, she started her career as a stage manager off-Broadway. Subsequently, she transitioned into casting roles for theater productions in both New York City and Washington D.C., eventually relocating to Los Angeles.

In the late 1990s, Yeskel sat on the board of the Casting Society and was nominated for ten CSA Artios Awards, winning three – one shared with casting director Gary Zuckerbrod for “Pulp Fiction”, another with Hicks for “Curb Your Enthusiasm”, and a third for “The Sessions”. Yeskel also belonged to the Casting Directors branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Yeskel was characterized as a distinctive individual, boasting a strong hippie spirit. She guided others through compassion, earning affection in return. She is mourned by her brother David, daughter Emily, son-in-law David Jones, and grandchildren Bentley and Luna. A celebration honoring her life will take place in the spring; further information will be shared shortly.
