As a seasoned movie-goer and sports enthusiast with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this partnership between Roku and the X Games is nothing short of a game-changer! Growing up in the 90s, I vividly remember the excitement surrounding the first X Games back in 1994. To see it now find a new home on the Roku Channel is truly heartwarming.

Roku has reached an agreement with the X Games, making The Roku Channel the primary streaming platform in the U.S. for broadcasting both the forthcoming Winter 2025 event in Aspen and a summer event scheduled for the following year.

The X Games competitions will be broadcast on the Roku Sports Channel and the newly introduced X Games TV Fast channel. In addition, Roku is planning to introduce an “X Games Zone” on their platform before the live events. This zone will serve as a comprehensive hub for fans, offering them easy access to highlights, clips, interviews, archival content, and more related to the X Games.

This represents the most recent strategic step by Roku in the realm of live sports, as a result of agreements with Formula E, NBA G League, MLB Sunday Lead Off, along with its sports-oriented talk programs like “Good Morning Football: Overtime” and “The Rich Eisen Show.

Over a three-day period, starting January 23rd in Aspen, Colorado, the X Games Aspen will unfold, featuring primarily skiing and snowboarding contests. Meanwhile, plans are underway to introduce a summer edition of the X Games that emphasizes warm-weather activities, which is expected to be broadcast on Roku streaming devices.

Two years following ESPN’s sale of a significant portion of the X Games, an event they initially launched in 1994 to a private-equity firm called MSP Sports Capital (in 2022), ESPN still maintains a smaller share of ownership and serves as its linear TV partner. In other words, ESPN no longer owns the majority, but it’s still involved with the X Games on television.

In June, it was revealed that starting from 2026, the X Games will transition into a league format where teams will compete throughout the entire year.

The collaboration with X Games is an ideal blend of content and broadcasting, as over half of The Roku Channel’s monthly audience falls within the age range of 18-49. Notably, X Games has cultivated a lifestyle brand that resonates perfectly at the nexus of sports and youth culture. Joe Franzetta, head of sports at Roku Media, expressed enthusiasm about leveraging Roku’s vast reach to make these competitions, along with the athletes driving them, accessible to a massive audience free of charge.

As the new head of X Games, I’m excited to share the news about our partnership with Roku. Similar to us, they are dedicated to providing an exceptional experience for both our athletes and spectators. This alliance will expand the reach of our world-class action sports events, allowing more people to appreciate the talent, ingenuity, and enthusiasm displayed by the remarkable athletes who make X Games the pinnacle of action sports competition.
