Gareth Edwards, a British director famous for big-budget films like Godzilla, Rogue One, and a new Jurassic World movie, recently directed an original science fiction film that’s now gaining popularity on Prime Video.
The sci-fi film The Creator is back in the top 10 movies on Prime Video in the U.S. It’s currently at No. 10, according to data from FlixPatrol. The Naked Gun is the most popular movie right now at No. 1, followed by Sinners (No. 3), Final Destination Bloodlines (No. 4), Playdate (No. 5), A Minecraft Movie (No. 6), and A Working Man (No. 7).
In the futuristic action film The Creator, co-written by Chris Weitz, humanity is locked in a war against artificial intelligence. John David Washington plays Joshua, a former special forces operative tasked with finding and eliminating the “Creator” – the mind behind a powerful new weapon that could end the war by wiping out mankind.
Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, and Allison Janney appeared alongside John David Washington in the film, released in September 2023. Despite the director’s previous successful movies, The Creator didn’t perform well in theaters. It earned just over $104 million worldwide, barely covering its $80 million production cost.
I really wanted to love The Creator, but it seemed like critics were pretty divided. It currently has a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences enjoyed it a bit more with a 75% rating. It didn’t do amazingly at the box office, and the reviews were mixed, but I was happy to see it get nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards and other big award shows. It truly looked fantastic.
What’s Next for Gareth Edwards?
Edwards recently directed the newest installment in the Jurassic series. The 2025 sci-fi action movie is the seventh Jurassic film from Universal, and continues the story from 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion. He took over as director after negotiations with David Leitch fell through. The script was written by David Koepp, who hadn’t worked on a Jurassic Park movie since The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997.
With Jurassic World Rebirth, the film series moved in a new direction, introducing a completely fresh cast without any returning characters from earlier movies. The film stars Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, who is hired to lead a team on a secret mission to collect DNA from the world’s largest dinosaurs. Rebirth proved to be a huge success, earning over $869 million globally. A sequel is planned, but it’s currently unknown if the director, Edwards, will return.
The Creator is available to stream on Prime Video.
