Dan Houser, one of the creators of Rockstar Games, has shared his thoughts on the potential of artificial intelligence in modern game development.
While promoting his new novel, A Better Paradise, on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, Dan Houser – who left Rockstar Games in 2020 and now runs Absurd Ventures – shared his thoughts on the future of video games.
Games in danger of being “distracted by money”
According to Houser, creative projects often face a choice: they can evolve into something truly innovative, or they can become solely focused on profit. He believes the pursuit of money always poses a risk to artistic endeavors, but remains optimistic about the potential for creating compelling, immersive stories. He feels there’s still a lot of room for creative growth in interactive entertainment.
When asked about the future of gaming, Houser offered a seemingly contradictory view: he believes both big-budget, high-production games and smaller, more independent games will thrive. He pointed out that this is already happening, with both types of games finding success in the industry.
Dan Houser, a co-founder of Rockstar Games, believes the gaming industry risks becoming too focused on profits and losing sight of creating compelling and innovative games. He suggests the industry faces a critical choice: prioritize artistic quality and creativity, or simply chase financial gain.

During the interview, Houser also revealed they’ve been working on a game based on the world of A Better Paradise for the past year and a half. He mentioned that, contrary to what some might think, artificial intelligence hasn’t proven to be particularly helpful in the game’s development.
We’re exploring AI, but honestly, it’s not as revolutionary as some companies claim. It’s a tool with limitations and won’t magically fix everything.
The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 is now expected to launch on November 19, 2026. Throughout November, Rockstar Games faced protests at its offices following the dismissal of over 30 employees due to serious misconduct.
