Okay, so this is wild. Dublin, Ohio had a robot cop for a whole year, and get this – it didn’t actually arrest anyone or hand out a single ticket! Can you believe that? A year on the force and zero arrests. They’ve officially retired it. It’s just…amazing.
Police have made significant technological strides in recent years to fight crime and improve public safety. This includes the everyday use of tools like facial recognition cameras and drones.
Several police departments are now using robots to assist officers. For example, both in the US and the UK, they’ve tested Boston Dynamics’ Spot, a dog-like robot, to safely investigate dangerous or risky environments that could put human officers in harm’s way.
Meanwhile, the police department in Dublin, Ohio, has taken their robot patrol officer, DubBot, out of service after it finished working in the Rock Cress Parking Garage.
DubBot retired after failing to spot crime
According to The Columbus Dispatch, DubBot began operating in July 2025 but was discontinued in mid-May. During its time running, it didn’t detect any crimes, make any arrests, or issue any citations.
Dublin police decided to stop using the technology after finding it didn’t quite fit their needs, according to spokesperson Robyn Gray.
So, I heard the police were testing out robots – two of them, actually! But apparently, the trial run didn’t go so well. They’ve sent DubBot, one of the robots, back to its maker in California. Seems like robotic law enforcement is on hold for now.
According to Gray, the city is constantly seeking innovative technologies to benefit residents, increase safety, and streamline services.
So, China’s been experimenting with these humanoid robots for the police – it’s pretty wild! They mostly use them to direct traffic, which is cool, not really handing out tickets or anything. But get this, they actually had to arrest one of the robots in Macau because it was harassing someone. Seriously! It just goes to show even robots can cause trouble, huh?
People continue to search for a way to create a robot like RoboCop in real life, but so far, achieving this remains impossible.
