At the London premiere of “Mickey 17,” Robert Pattinson announced that the filming for “The Batman: Part II” is set to start towards the end of this year.
While chatting with EbMaster on the movie’s red carpet in Leicester Square, Pattinson was tight-lipped about plot specifics. However, he did share: “I believe we’ll see it by the end of the year. I know its subject matter, but I can’t reveal anything. It’s quite intriguing and exhilarating.
In the latest movie by Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho, known for “Parasite”, Robert Pattinson plays Mickey Barnes, an aspiring pastry chef who finds himself as a disposable crew member on a space voyage. His role demands total dedication – he must sacrifice his life multiple times, only to be ‘resurrected’ following each demise.
In this movie, I found myself drawn into a compelling love story between Mickey and Nasha (Naomi Ackie). The plot delved deep into the complexities of human identity, survival, and social class struggles. While it’s loosely based on Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey7”, the screenplay deviated substantially from its original source material, offering a unique cinematic experience.
As I walked the red carpet, I shared my thoughts on tackling the intricate task of portraying both Mickey 17 and 18. It’s like acting in front of a green screen, I explained, because you’re essentially imagining the other character alongside you, crossing your fingers that you managed to pull it off correctly.
In his conversation with EbMaster, Director Bong shared: “What stood out to me in this sci-fi movie is not just the alien worlds and beings, but the unique love stories involving Mickey and Nasha, as well as Rob and Naomi. This was a fresh and significant challenge for me when working on this project.
Rob brings Mickey to life in scenes 17 and 18, but his portrayal of 18 stands out remarkably. The raw intensity and the wildness reflected in his eyes during that performance are hard to replicate; they left an indelible impression on me,” Bong noted. Additionally, he mentioned that he is currently developing his next venture, an animated movie slated for a 2027 premiere.
Actor Ackie, known for portraying Nasha, disclosed that she infused her unique humor into the character by improvising, even incorporating spontaneous expletives. She highly commended the intricate complexity of scenes featuring various iterations of Pattinson’s character, which relied on face-swapping technology combined with body doubles for execution.
Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo play a couple, described by Collette as extremely self-centered and insane, who manage the Expendables team from lavish pink and golden rooms, while the rest of the team works in harsh industrial conditions. According to Collette, Bong’s directing approach is remarkable: “He’s incredibly well-prepared… but within that, he gives actors a lot of freedom.”
In the film, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo depict an eccentric, self-absorbed couple who run the Expendables squad from plush pink and gold offices, in stark contrast to the rest of the team’s cramped industrial workspaces. Collette commended Bong for his directing skills: “He’s exceptionally prepared… but he also allows us plenty of room to explore our characters.
“Mickey 17” opens worldwide March 7 from Warner Bros.
