Robert Pattinson Says People Still Tell Him ‘Twilight’ Ruined the Vampire Genre: ‘Are You Still Stuck on That S—? … That Happened Almost 20 Years Ago’

In a chat with GQ Spain, Robert Pattinson playfully dismissed any lingering animosity towards the “Twilight” series. Known for portraying Edward Cullen in the 2008 film of the same name, Pattinson’s role sparked a blockbuster movie franchise valued at $3.3 billion over five movies, catapulting him and his co-star Kristen Stewart into international stardom.

In a recent interview, Pattinson remarked, “It’s surprising to me that people continue to say, ‘Man, ‘Twilight’ really damaged the vampire genre,'” he commented. “Isn’t it time to move on from that topic? It seems odd to be still upset over something that happened nearly 20 years ago.

In 2022, when Robert Pattinson chatted with GQ, he shared that he aimed to make the first “Twilight” film as raw and emotional (emo) as feasible. At that point, he was 21 years old and grappling with teenage angst, yet his idea for the movie clashed with the studio’s perspective.

Back then, I aimed to give the film an artistic edge,” I shared, reflecting on my role. “There was this peculiar apprehension from the studio about making it overly emotional or dramatic. I felt that approach was crucial for the character. Honestly, I spent a significant amount of time on set feeling frustrated… I can hardly believe some of the actions I portrayed half the time.

One day on the “Twilight” set, Pattinson’s supervisors dropped by and suggested he should lighten up a bit and not come off as so somber. They flat-out told him that if he didn’t change his ways, he could be let go from the project right then and there.

In 2023, during an interview on “Happy Sad Confused”, director of “Twilight” Catherine Hardwicke shared that the movie studio had doubts about Robert Pattinson’s physical attractiveness to portray the character, Edward Cullen.

In his recollection, when Pattinson visited his home for an audition, he sported black, fringed hair and seemed a bit unfit due to frequent pub visits. After spending a couple of hours doing playful auditions with Kristen, Hardwicke reviewed the footage the next morning and felt that their on-screen chemistry was promising. He needed to verify this, as he had been initially carried away by their interaction in person, but ensuring it would translate well to the screen was crucial.

After that, I forwarded it to Summit. He went to meet them, and they asked me, ‘Can you help make this person look more attractive?’ I replied, ‘Absolutely, I can. His high cheekbones alone are stunning, and we’ll work on his hairstyle, fitness regimen, and overall appearance to enhance his good looks.’ However, they were initially skeptical. It turned out it was Rob, who had come over with a dirty shirt or something.”

“I passed the item along to Summit, who went to see them. They asked if I could make this person look more appealing. I said, ‘Definitely! He has striking cheekbones, and we’re going to work on his hair, fitness routine, and overall appearance to bring out his best features.’ At first, they were hesitant, but it turned out to be Rob, who was wearing a stained shirt.”

“I sent the item to Summit, who met with them. They asked if I could help make this person look more attractive. ‘Yes, of course!’ I replied. ‘His cheekbones alone are captivating, and we’ll work on his style, fitness, and overall appearance to highlight his good looks.’ Initially, they were doubtful, but it was Rob who showed up with a messy shirt.

In the initial plans, Pattinson didn’t match the image that the studio had for Edward or what fans anticipated. When it was announced that “Twilight” was going to be a movie, many fans favored pre-Superman Henry Cavill for the role. Even the franchise author, Stephenie Meyer, had publicly stated that Cavill was her top pick. However, Director Catherine Hardwicke felt that Cavill appeared too old to portray a high school student. She successfully persuaded the studio to choose Pattinson instead, and since then, this decision has become a significant part of movie history.
