According to creator Robert Kirkman, Lee Pace’s character, Thragg, will do more than just act as a villain in Invincible Season 4. He’ll also uncover the deep and complex history of the powerful Viltrumite race.
Okay, so the new season of Invincible is finally here, and I’ve watched the first three episodes! It’s really focusing on Mark Grayson – Steven Yeun still sounds amazing as him – and how exhausting it is for him to constantly be the one protecting everyone. He’s dealing with all sorts of dangers, not just the usual Earthly problems, but stuff from outer space too. It’s a lot for him to handle!
The galaxy is uniting to fight back against the remaining Viltrumites. Omni-Man and Allen the Alien are working together, gathering weapons and allies from across the universe, hoping to create a force capable of defeating the Viltrumite empire.
Okay, so Grand Regent Thragg, the big bad running the Viltrumite Empire, might seem like just another super-strong villain like Omni-Man or Conquest, right? But Robert Kirkman, the guy who created the show, actually brought him in to give us some backstory on the Viltrumites themselves. He wants us to understand where they come from and what makes them tick, not just see another fight.
Thragg changes Invincible Season 4 into a “completely new show”

In a recent interview with TopMob about Invincible Season 4, Kirkman discussed why viewers should be invested in the character Thragg. He assured those new to the story, particularly those unfamiliar with the comics, that Thragg is more complex than just another powerful enemy for Mark to overcome.
He explained that Thragg’s presence adds depth to the show by revealing the history of the Viltrumites, helping viewers understand them better and appreciate the danger they represent to the universe.
Although initially presented as just another Viltrumite, this character dramatically alters the story and refocuses the show in a compelling way. He essentially reshapes everything, making Season 4 feel like a fresh start.
Thragg’s approaching arrival is already giving us a better understanding of Viltrumite society – for example, Conquest’s desire for death as a reward in Episode 2. That episode also showed a compelling flashback revealing how the Scourge Virus wiped out much of the Viltrumite population and killed millions when Omni-Man was young.
According to Simon Racciopa, a co-showrunner on the series, the introduction of Thragg is the culmination of three seasons of building up the Viltrum Empire. He explains that viewers have seen glimpses of the Empire’s power and have been anticipating their arrival. “Now we’re finally showing them,” Racciopa said, emphasizing that introducing the Viltrumites was essential to the show’s narrative.
